On transformers pins

Hello, I was wondering: When you remove the pins of a transformer to paint it, what is the best way to re-insert those pins without damaging the painted finish? I mean, taking them out is easy, as it does not matter if you scratch a little part of the plastic in the process (you will sand and paint it anyway), but when everything is nicely painted... what?
