A material with a similar texture to balloons?

Postby timone317 » Wed Nov 28, 2012 11:58 am

(Using balloons wasn't my idea...this guy did it first on a Rouge custom...so credit to Wings...)

I've wanted to finish a few customs that need minor cloth additions and I'm hoping to avoid working with actual fabric...and after checking, it seems that balloons would work perfect for my needs but I'm worried about working with the balloons since they're created in a round shape. Is there any material similar to balloons that comes in a sheet? I'm not interested in trying foam, foam would be too thick. I need the material to be thin and rubbery, but also hard to tear.

So why wouldn't ballons work? You said the customs you are working on only need minor cloth additions, since you'd only be using a small section of the ballon it's round shape wouldn't matter. Kinda like how the earth is round but it looks flat to us since we can only see a small section of it with our eyes. Give ballons a shot, they'll probably work just fine. If you're worried about the shape of the balloon, just buy bigger balloons.

Guess it was poor wording...I consider the parts minor, but they're actually large robes and lengthy capes. I'm going to work with a few balloons on smaller additions but I'd hate to end up with a robe that looks like a patched quilt.

I know you can def buy balloons that would be rather large (should give you plenty of material to use for a 6 inch figure). Just cut to shape and you should be fine.

You can try rubber cleaning gloves. You know those yellow kind?? You can get them at wal mart next to the dish detergents.

That could be PERFECT...nice idea. Hopefully I can find some gloves that are colored white.

You'd be surprised how many people recommended condoms when I asked this question...but actually, the sleeve idea is awesome, I may end up using that for something.

You could also check out Heat Shrink tubing. Just about any hardware store has it and it comes in a bunch of different sizes and colors.
