The twist tie idea sounds good. I have a few of those wood things your talking about, picked them up a while back from Wal-mart.

Bases are a great way to display your figures/customs. I really dig the Stargate rings and the Jason/Freddy scenes. I sometimes make a base from a figure stand, adding some plaster of paris mix, little pebbles and stuff like that.

Cool stuff, I especially like the Snape's classroom and Stargate dioramas.

Mostly I just use transparent plastic discs for bases these days (made from toy packaging), the main reasons being (1) I'm lazy, (2) they're generic, so they go with anything (i.e., I can stick the figure in any backdrop I want without the base looking out of place), and (3) they tend to look better as a set, even if the characters have nothing to do with one another, if they all have the same type of support structure.

Occasionally I'll sculpt something unique/specific to the character, like the tree branch for my recent Goblin Soothsayer entry for the Tabletop Clash contest, but I generally stick with the discs.

Decided to throw these up here as I think I am done, but I'm not gonna bother with the showcase on this one.

That's awesome bud, just like I thought. It looks good alone but add the figures and it really sells the set, great work man!!
