Who are the Teen Titans?

Who knows the story on how the Teen Titans came to exist? I know they have a cartoon on Cartoon Channel right now, but aren't they originally from the DC comics? I saw the action figures at Target the other day and was just curious because I don't know anything about them.

Raven is the bestest character ever to be created and dont you dare call her a witch

Beast Boy is a shapeshifter

I believe their Robin is Tim Drake. (The kid after monkey Grayson)

Then the get help from Speedy, Aqualad, Terra, and sometimes Nightwing...

Nah, I didn't know anything about them except the action figure names. The info was helpful. So do they have any special story behind them, like they crash landed from the planet Krypton or where all kidnapped from their village by evil villains and are out for vigilante revenge?
