Why does everyone hate Marvel Universe so much?

Me, just now getting into the whole action figure scene after like...what...10 or so years out of it? (Not counting Bionicles, of course :P)

But anyway, is the main reason everybody hates them (or doesn't like them, whatever) is because they scaled them down from the Legends? Or is the sculpts bad?

Because they look good to me.
Now, I was wondering, me, as a beginning collector/customizer, should I just get the Universe ones, since I dont' have any Legends? Or what do you think?

Me personally, I actually like them, because I already have a good amount of TFAC GI Joes, which are in perfect scale with them, but I haven't picked any up yet. If you're just beginning I think starting out new would help you money wise, HML distribution is horrible and TBML aren't even in the works anymore, so it'd be hard to actually find ones you like without throwing out some money. Though I guess it all depends on you, which ever you like your collection to be composed of.

I think there are 2 main reasons for why people don't like them: 1. Marvel Legends lasted for over 20 series, releasing most of the major characters in the Marvel U and plenty more, however Marvel Universe comes along at a smaller scale and starts releasing characters that never got released in ML. While MU has given collectors figures of the more obscure characters that they have been clamoring for, all the new figures are in a different scale than what many collectors already had. For those that aren't completionists this is not a problem but for those who are or people that like uniformity in their collections feel the need to buy figures of characters they already have. Which leads to reason number 2. Price, until recent price hikes and even with the current prices a new Marvel Legends figure off the shelf will run you about $10-$13, but a Marvel Universe figure runs $8-$9. Many people can't stomach paying well over half the price of a ML figure for less than half the amount of plastic.

tl:dr new scale and overpriced figures makes collectors despise Hasbro's decision to kill ML for MU.

From my stand point its all about scale. Most (95%) of my collection is 1/12th scale. I'm not fond of other scales. To ME, 6-8 inch figure are the collecting standard.

I like MU. I'm not a complesiest but I do pick some up and I really enjoy them. They are also easier to get in Canada. All the big box stores carry them while only LCS carry the HML 2 packs. It's also cheaper. A HML 2 pack at a LCS will run you $40 while a MU will run you $10, plus if there is anything wrong with it you can return it to the big box store.

I remember when McHalo figs first came out.
5" figs really did seem a lot smaller than the 6" we'd grown accustomed to.

That was the beginning of the big shrink-down that began to affect almost all lines.

I think it had to do with that oil-price scam the so-called government has been running on us all for about a decade.

Most of their faces are poorly sculpted and according to a couple review they loosen up really quickly.

Change was unnecessary, 6" is (to me) the perfect scale for figures, Pissing collectors off by releasing things in the "new scale" that we have been wanting forever in the 6" scale, flimsy, wimpy and weak~fragile little suckers, lack of detail capabilities, the everchanging artic between lines + lack of artic capabilities a larger figure would have, heads/faces usually look like crap, some figures (like bulkier larger ones) just dont look right in this scale, They cost too much for so little, lack of pack-ins and accessories, no BAF, Etc...

There's some good ones out there, It's not all bad~I just dont care for the "New" scale.

Really though, ToyBiz Spoiled and made us Rotten. xD

I hate them because they are badly made figures. The proportions and paint jobs are generally poor. I also don't like that they charge as much fore a tiny figure as they used too fore the full sized marvel legends.

It's the scale and the price. It's unjustified and you can't do a really nice custom on something that small easily.

I agree with the earlier statements. I collected several of the ML waves and now Hasbro is releasing characters that were not made in the 6inch scale. Plus I refuse to pay $9.00 for a 3.75 inch figure while not too long ago I paid that amount for a 6inch figure. I also think that Hasbro does not do nearly as good a job on sculpts and paint apps (if any) as Toybiz did. Basically when Hasbro was making ML they were selling a inferior product at higher prices.

I like the 6" scale better because they are a lot more detailed and have a sturdy construction.
Unfortunately I missed out on the whole Marvel Legends because I was collecting other series at that time and still had most of the 4.5" Toy Biz X-Men, X-Force, Spider-Man & Iron Man figures.
I ended up selling all those old figures a couple of months ago because I started to look very critical at most of my collections.

Regarding MU figures, I have to agree with Aesthetikz on many points, that the MU are flimsy, wimpy and weak~fragile figures with the lack of detail capabilities, They cost too much for so little, lack of pack-ins and accessories, no BAF, Etc...
What I am mostly disappointed in, is the fact that Hasbro made the MU T-crotches out of very fragile PLASTIC,
while the SAME figure construction as Hasbro's G.I.Joe figures have METAL T-crotches.
Hasbro knows how to make them better, yet they make them very fragile! I find this inexcusable from Hasbro's part.

Aside from that, I actually started to collect the Marvel Universe instead of Marvel Legends because of various reasons;
- MU are easier to find
- MU are "cheaper" (but still expensive at almost $10 for a tiny figure) since ML are mostly on the secondary market only.
- MU are in scale with many other action figures, which is the best possible reason why I got MU instead of ML because it's in the same scale, it has that awesome cool factor.

- Terminator Salvation by Playmates (because it's always cool to have some endo-skeletons!)

- Microman (various characters from various licenses) by Takara

I am not exclusively collecting the 4" scale figures, on the contrary, I'm collecting many other series ever since the early 80's!
My main series atm is Masters of the Universe Classics.
I still want the main Team of X-Men in the 6" scale Marvel Legends. I started last month with Nightcrawler, Iceman, Psylocke and Longshot.

I hate the small scale and the high price. I don't own too many ML figs (more of a DC guy myself) but the Legends line was supreme anyone doing 6 in figures now took a page from marvel in that respect.

I also HATE AVI ARAD, Everything bad at marvel is his fault (Spider-Man 3) and I know he has something to do with Toy Biz and the license of Marvel toys going to Hasbro, that piece of Eurotrash can burn in hell, have a nice day.

I don't hate them, but I do think:

1. MU for the most part are Poorly sculpted.
2. Prices for what you get is high.
3. Uniformity issues
4. I just plain enjoy the 6 inch figures better.

That being said there are a few figures I've picked up, but mostly only to go with my Marvel Showdown figures. I really do wish we'd get some of the MU in ML size:Ultron, Enchantress, Wrecking Crew, etc.

Well, my guess there would be all that happened was Toybiz's contract was up, and Hasbro offered Marvel more money.

Also, as far as Spiderman 3 goes, you can't take all the blame off of Sam Raimi. Assuming hes sane, theres no way he could have gone into the franchise thinking he wouldn't have to do Venom at some point. Despite current fan backlash against Venom, he remains one of Spidermans most popular villains. Raimi should have swallowed his childish pride, and treated the character with at least a little respect.

Back to the topic though... yeah, MU blows. Bad sculpts, bad articulation, bad paint, difficult scale than most peoples collections, high price... it really just goes on and on.
