Elbow/Knee Joint Replacement

Postby Bad_Guy_Robot » Wed Apr 04, 2012 1:14 pm

Hello everyone, I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction on a problem I'm having. I've got a couple of figures who have broken limbs, at the knees and elbows. I know about the method of fixing pegs with small screws and have utilized this a time or two before, but wasn't sure if it would work for joints of this type. Also, in a somewhat related issue, how would one go about making an elbow/knee joint out of a solid limb? I know I've seen it done before, but the only way I could see it being done is with some extremely precise cuts, then there's the issue I'm currently having of what to use as a pivot. Anyway, any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks! :)

My friend can fix broken joints, he uses a screw. I think when it comes to solid joints you will need some good clean cuts then you could just take a pec from a fodder fig or make one yourself. I used thoothpicks as finger joints on my rhino, not quite the same thing though :-k . Did you check the tutorials? You could use a small screw if the figure is big enough. Let me check the tutorials and see if they have anything.

Thanks for the quick reply. I was unsure if a screw would work, but I guess I'll give it a shot this weekend when I do a little moddin'. And in regards to the making joints from fixed arm figures, that's what I thought, although I'll have to be extremely careful with my cuts, both for the figure and myself; I've cut myself working on figures several times lol [even once on the leg - through jeans o.O that one stung a little lol]. I'll post back the results of said elbow/knee screw fixing attempts when I get a chance. Thanks again!

I'm working on an idea for making replacement joints using a 3D printer. I wonder if that would sell for customizers? You make a cut and drill a hole in each part of the limb, glue in the replacement joint, and paint. I'm also looking at making custom figures in a variety of body types and sizes. Our town is getting a FabLab later this year and I want to throw out some ideas and maybe do a limited run there to see if its worth buying a 3D printer later this year.

Galactape, I tried it this weekend, and as far as the screw for the replacement elbow/knee joint, it seems plausible. One elbow I tried to fix came out alright, then other did ok. Might have to dremel and clay over the head of the screw to make it look more natural. And as far as making a joint... let's just say now one of my "experiment on" figs is now rockin' some nubs lol

Clif, that sounds awesome, I didn't know you could do something like that. I know a lot of folks on here would probably love that idea.
