Comic Con Question

Postby Chancellor » Thu May 15, 2008 7:09 pm

So... I've seen pictures from the SanDiago Con and the New York Con, but if there's a comic con coming here to Michigan... does that mean it'll be the same as the others? As in, all the toy prototypes of the new MLs and famous people???

Wondering if I'm gonna get a bang for my buck since my dad refuses to pay...

I don't know for sure, but make sure it's the official ComicCon. There's other stuff like DragonCon and smaller events that people organize.

Actually, New York Comic-Con has no connection to San Diego Comic-Con, it's a completely stand alone show. (SDCC is connected with Wondercon and Alternative Press Expo)

The one you're looking at in Michigan is MotorCity Comic-Con, it does seem to have a decent list of celebrity guests attending, but I didn't see the list of companies doing booths there (mostly cause I didn't look..)

So far, from the various cons I've been to, the best one, by far, for seeing stuff on new and upcomings toys is San Diego Comic-Con. It's still the worlds largest Comics convention so all the companies come out and set up massive booths.

Going out to Dragon-Con for the first time this year though, so dunno what it's got.

Your complaing about cost?

THe fan expo in Toronto costs me at least 40 bucks.

Also it's worth going to shop. Many dealers have older toys and stuff or maybe have stuff you might not find in your local area. Plus there can be some import stuff from japan and hong kong. Finailly there are some deals to be had there. I see a lot of 5 bucks ML at these things. Complete your collection or buy some fodder.

As for seeing prototypes when they come out at a con you can bet the next day you can see them online.

A con has lots of oppunties to do other stuff too.

For a measly 20 bucks i would recomend you attend.

Yeah, $20.00 for entry is very cheap for convention tickets.

Gimme a break - I went last year and it never got hotter than 76 degrees outside. San Diego is beautiful in July! Inside the convention center they ran the A/C full tilt. And it was considerably less than $300 to get in.

Scottrooper > I went to Dragon Con last year and it sucked - it's poorly run. If you are dead set on going make sure you buy your tix online. We bought tix at the door and had to stand in line for 3 hours to do so. It's mostly about Gaming and Cosplay. The comic and sci-fi stuff is minor there.

PFFFFFT. Yeah, if you reserve your entrance like a year in advance then it's a lot cheaper, and anything over 65 degrees is too darn hot!

No worries on that, we've already got tickets and the what-not :-)
And, since I'm into the costuming aspect of thigns as well, it'll suit me okee doke :-) (Have Stormtrooper, Clonetrooper, Scout Trooper armors, a Rebel Fleet trooper suit, and a Darth Nihilus costume. Plus an X2 Cyclops costume.)

San Diego has been very nice each time I've gone (both weather wise and the con itself), but like Dr. Nightmare said, it definately gets expensive. $300 is actually probably a pretty low price point to look at per day at that one (hotel being the biggest cost by far.) It's had the most varied vendors and biggest variety of convention goers. (example: A couple years back, on one day, I got to meet and chat with WWE wrestler Kane for a few minutes at his autograph table, sit in on a panel about upcoming Hasbro products, meet Star Wars comic artists, and then be interviewed by Gene Simmons who was just walking the floor doing interviews for some show he was either pitching or was doing.)

I do attend Wondercon every year though, in San Francisco in February, it's like San Diego Comic-Con Jr. :-)
