Fodder for 1/18 figures

Posted in Custom Workstation

Hello People of the Realm!
So, after seeing all the amazing work being done on 1/18 blanks and MU figs, I decided to look into the scale a little deeper and discovered that I can actually afford this hobby if I work at that scale! what a concept! that said, I got some incredible advice from Dravenheart and great direction to a couple resources, such as Boss Fight Studios, Marauders Inc, Raging Spoon, and Avacs. I'm looking for more resources that you all have personal experience with. Specifically, i'm looking for armor bits, hair pieces, random MU fodder parts, vehicles, mechs, and playset/diorama pieces. load me with links, folks!

thanks as always!

You should check out the tutorial section if you haven't already. Anyway, the usual answer would be good prep work and quality materials, though there's still no absolute guarantee the paint won't chip or flake, as there are any number of other factors that can come into play. I have some figures I've done which I can handle all day, toss around, and nothing happens, then I have others using the same materials and techniques and paint will flake if you look at it the wrong way. I normally just use the Testors Dullcote spray lacquer, but keep in mind all that does is add a protective layer on top off the paint, if the figure wasn't prepared well (washed and parts sanded) or you use cheap paints, the paint and sealant will still tend to flake. There's another user who swears by Modge Podge, which you can find at craft stores.

I love the tutorial section, it got my through my first custom. I know what you mean with the paint: At the moment I'm using Tamiya and Testers sealant. I guess I was asking if there was another step that might add to the tutorial that someone has stumbled on. Thanks for taking the time! I'm really excited about this project. A childhood thing, ya know?

Nothing I've read about specifically. I've seen some people mention using vinyl inks on their customs but nothing specific about whether those are more durable or bond better with the plastic. I've kind of experimented with the Angelus paints for leather, which were suggested as a solution for painting rubbery capes and other pieces since it remains flexible after drying.

That's actually super helpful for when I get to the body armor phase of the project. Thank you!

Also, If anyone has any tips on a sealant or technique that makes the figure durable enough for light play, please toss that in here too! Thanks all!

...so...I can say that I recently found a somewhat experimental, but really strong sealing after sculpting a pendant for a necklace...I thought that jewelry on a necklace is usually exposed to heavier ravaging than most of our beloved custom action figures and could need an even better sealing.I had the idea to seal my paint with a uv-light-curing sealer gel for nail polish, since I had gel and the lamp happened to be on hand.I think this stuff is usually rather expensive and it was a bit difficult to get this quite stiff gel smooth and thin...but it worked,is hard as stone and shines wonderfully! think it's also available in matte, otherwise maybe very fine sandpaper?^^ well,I would definitely do more with it if I'll get near to this lamp again!

Hay would be a great thing to add to ways of protecting joints from paint rub! I'll use it for the higher wear areas!

like I said,it's really a little difficult to apply it thin and smooth, but it's strong as hell and could also be smoothed out and polished after curing...I'd really like to do more experiments with this cause it's waaaayyy more durable than every other sealing I tried for now.may perfect for customs that aren't only made to stand on a shelf...

I'm guessing this is kinda the same stuff that was being advertised as a miracle super adhesive a couple of years ago. I was thinking then that it might be useful for customizing in some manner.

hey there!
I know it was about fodder parts in general, but if you want a good adress for cheap bases at that scale you can may check this here too: http://gonativetoys.com/store_figure.html
I got some of them, but I'm still a little scared of sculpting such tiny stuff^^ what I can say is that these figs are pretty cool and really 'superarticulated'.each one comes with three pairs of hands and two heads,so a little fodder is included but unfortunately they also need some paintrub-prevention on the joints.best greetings and wishes again!

I know!! Great stuff. Thanks for the links and the well wishes. We're down at the Mayo for her third chemo treatment, and while that's not exactly a b12 shot, she's getting a little better everyday!

Also, would you mind occasionally commenting with me in German? I studied it a little bit and discovered that I'm much better at reading the language than forming the grammar. I'd like the practice, please?

haha!

Danke, she's very flattered that strangers on this board and from around the world are keeping her in their thoughts. as for the translation; I'm proud to say that I got the idea, but I did have to look it up to fill in the blanks.
