The thin wire from cellphone/mp3 earbuds works too. After you split it one side is already flat.

What do you usually shave with? A knife or a razor! :P It's easier to glue two flat surfaces than it is to glue a round one to a flat one, that's why it's a good idea to shave a little. You don't have to, just saying it's more secure.

I use fishing-line and it works fine, just make sure you glue it firmly. You could try shaving a little off one side and gluing it with that part so it's a flatter surface.
