To open or not to open?

Posted in Action Figure Chatter

Hey all,

I just found this site and am glad to find a community dedicated to a hobby I have had for many years.

I just recently started collecting some WWE wrestlers. I'm not collecting a certain series or anything just some of the old wrestlers that I remember from way back. Most will come from the "Classics" line. I Currently only have one that just arrived today, Hollywood Hulk Hogan, and he is the first of about ten or so that I intend to get over time. Now barring any special packs that are limited edition or anything like that, do you think I should display in box because they will be worth something, or should I open up to display them so I can enjoy them as well as look at them? This is a debate I always have with myself and I can never decide so I'd be happy to hear any input you guys have.

thanks in advance,

Viper

I would open them, its a habit I picked up when I was a kid. Anything pre-1980's or extremely rare should probably stay in the package if you are looking for them to be valuable. Everything that was put out later than that doesn't really have much more value than the self price because thats when the "collect every toy in the store and keep it in the box because it might be worth a lot in 10-20 years" craze started to hit.
Unfortunately I was born in '88 so the only toys that I had/have that are rare or valuable are ones that my dad found that someone had lost in a parking lot or set out for the trash (metal Tonka Trucks and a couple 70's era Jawas)

unless its rare or expensive you should take it out. I try to keep the packages for the ones that fit in this catagory that I open. THe only ones I keep sealed otherwise are store exclusive transformers since I probably have another version (such as the movie jazz). Half the exclusives are just repaints anyhow.

I think you should open it, so you enjoy it. It's not really an "action" figure staying in the package. I usually keep the box or backcard if it's cool. I'm just kidding I always keep the boxes and backcards . I have never got a figure that I didn't want to open. On some occasions I buy it, hoping to keep it MOC and then look back at how cool it is and open it up, play with it for awhile and then put it back in the package. I did that to my SW Animated Debut Boba Fett. There is really no point of buying something that is made to play with if you don't play with it. Like what everyone else said, if you decide not to open it get a second one and open that, and keep one MOC. Many people do that.

Man, I keep hearing this question. I have to ask you, would you buy a car and not drive it? Open them, Im an old guy and I open every single toy I get. If the package is cool I save it.

people who don't open toys should be buying statues, however, statues are a lot more expensive than action figures, so they are probably too poor to buy what they really want, so they take it out on the community by being stuck-up nerds about toys.

Well I don't collect wrestling figures. However my preference on whether or not I open a figure depends on the packaging. If it has really nice artwork I like then I keep it sealed. Then I would also buy another to open.

I agree with that 100%. I loved WCW and miss those old days of wrestling. Honestly, most of the guys I wanna get are old WCW guys that made the change. lol

I buy toys to play! lol

I still love opening them up and playing with all the accesorys and check their articulation

and when I get them I can't wait to get home to open them up.

1 thing I don't like tho, the looks I get from little kids in the toy isle in target lol

but if your a collector, keep them in box
if your a player than go to town

Just out of curiousity, I am also looking for a Sting figure. Can someone explain to me why the heck the TNA Sting figure is so darn expensive? it's like 45 bucks.

I'd post a link, but it won't let me

Thanks

Nice man. Thanks for the offer and I'll let you know, but I only have three so far being I picked up two today so I really don't have much to trade. I currently have (and opened) Hollywood Hulk Hogan(NWO black and white), Diamond Dallas Page, and Ruthless Agression Shawn Michaels. In terms of what I'm looking for I am looking for all the old guys I loved back in the day with paticular emphasis on Hulk Hogan and Steve Austin, my personal favs. Before anything else I'm looking to get a bunch of Hogan packs/varients from all his years in the business.

So I take it you guys think I should open them? lol Thanks for the input. I'm inclined to agree. There are a couple packs I wanna get that are rare. Those I probably won't open(Unless I get two).

Well do you plan to sell them in the futre? If not open them up.

I open my stuff because I never plan on selling them. I just want to enjoy them for my lifetime.

And yes I still play with them
