When a young boy named Matt Murdock tried to save an old man from a truck loaded with toxic waste one of the containers crashed to the ground. It's deadly contents missed the young boy and engulfed a family visiting the city. The parents died a gruesome death, but their daughter survived, but was blinded in the process. The nuclear waste took from the girl her sight, but gave her increased strength, stamina, and enhanced her remaining senses. This young girl was adopted by the neighborhood's convent, but she grew up bitter and resented the young boy's "heroics". They attended the same grade school in Hell's Kitchen, the same high school, and same college. They were lifelong rivals. As Murdock devoted his life to cleaning up Hell's Kitchen by becoming a lawyer, the young woman devoted her life to destroying the neighborhood he loved so much in an attempt to make him suffer, if only a fraction of the suffering he inadvertently caused her.
