x_X Use a large sheet of construction paper or some other flexible slick surface. Rest the paper on the wall so it kind of looks like a taco. The figure has to be standing on it and it has to cover the wall behind him at the same time, does that make sense?
Really, you can use whatever you want, even a towel, it just has to cover ALL of the floor and background.

Simply put: The more light you have the better the picture will be. Try to NEVER use the flash on your camera. It creates too many shadows and hides detail.
