After reading Neil Gaiman's The Sandman series in it's entirety, I decided to make a super-articulated custom of "Dream". However, I couldn't find the right base figure: most articulated figures I found was too bulky, or the wrong proportions.
Two years later, I'd improved my skills, and came across a SOTA 'Remy' figure for $9 at a local hobbyshop. I feel take on the Sandman turned out well. Both the Remy Character and the Sandman have such a long, narrow face, so this figure retains some of that serene, distant expression carried by the comics title character.
-Painted the body using multiple coats of black Vallejo acrylic paint.
-Sealed the black areas (while in pieces) using Superglue to prevent paint rub.
-Sculpted over the vertical wrist joint and sanded the surface to match.
-Painted multiple coats of white Vallejo acrylic paint on the Remy Figure's head and hands (x2 sets, alt. pair not pictured)
-Removed the hair from a DC Direct Sandman figure, along with the bird and cloak.
-Affixed a tiny Neonium Rare Earth magnet to both the birds footpeg, and the Sandman's forearm. Bird is now Magnetic!
-Sealed the entire figure with Vallejo Matte Finish Varnish.
-Create the figures base-stand using a Marvel Legends circular base by covering it with hobby plaster.
-Sanded down the surface slightly, and painted it black, and dry brushed various shades of grey-blue.
Sealed it with Krazyglue-superglue, and two coats of matte finish Vallejo Varnish.
On a related note, I have another version of this figure in the works, based directly from the comic art where 'Dream' is wearing gauntlets, boots, a T-shirt, and his helmet. :)
I hope you enjoy this figure - The Sandman is the first in a series of DC/Vertigo custom characters I've produced over the course of a year. I'll be posting all of my finished work as time permits.
