For my next custom I wanted to go BIG! But I also wanted to make a figure that hasn't been made before (to my knowledge) or most likely never will be made. So I decided to make Calibretto from the Battle Chasers comics. For those of you who aren't familiar Battle Chasers was an ultra cool comic by artist Joe Maduriera made in the late 90's. It was mostly a fantasy comic with some sci-fi elements. Calibretto was a War Golem actually the last War Golem. War Golems were massive robots built to fight wars so there will be less human casualties. But then they were outlawed and all War Golems were forced to be dismantled. But Calibretto was saved because he was discovered to be different. Unlike the other War Golems he was not just a mindless war machine but against his programming had a gentle soul.
Well before making this custom I did alittle research on the character and found out that Joe Mad intended Calibretto to be a tin woodsman type-character in a big suit of armor. Thus the character had a lot of elaborate designs on his armor and baggy pants. I envisioned him to have a simpler design. More like the robot Huitzil from Darkstalkers. With only a few crests and symbols denoting which allegiance the robot belong to. I also wanted him to have more humanoid shaped instead of the round poke'ball look.
So I started with a Pitt head and shoulders. Sculpted over his face, chest and back. (I must have sculpted his face a million times. For a character with no face it was difficult to get the look just right.)For his shoulders I broke a Lex Luthor armored figure apart and hollowed out the front and the back until they made perfectly round shoulder pads.Used Iron Monger arms as elbows and used Lex's legs as wrists and Monkey man's hands. I sculpted his fingers individually to keep all the articulation. Then I used Pitt's abdomen,Monkey man's legs with sculpted Doc Ock's boots. The Paints I used were flat aluminum, metallic grey, chrome silver, and smoke. Highlighted a few areas with tin blitz to give it that rusted look. He turned out massive and heavy yet surprisingly very poseable. Finally as an accessory I made a Gully out of a panda figure. Thanks for looking and reading this awfully long description. Thanks in advance for all the comments and criticisms. Please be kind I only started this hobby 6months ago and this is my first original nearly from scratch custom.
This is an awesome custom of Calibretto!
It's so cool to see him in 3D! Thank you!
