Mongu Custom Action Figure
Starting out the New Year with another addition to my Incredible Hulk's Greatest Hits series is Mongu, who appeared in THE INCREDIBLE HULK #211. I know the blue on Mongu's clothing looks darker in the photo than what I made, but from the photos in the comic, I went with a lighter shade to bring out more of the detailing from his body. I started off with the rotocast Hulk from the second movie that looked horrendous with it's stubbly biceps and un-natural looking forearms. I took the head from a Marvel Select Hulk and sculpted the hair and beard on it. I spliced the biceps and extended those with dowel rods and sculpted it up with magic putty, magic sculpt and milliput. I've never been much in the sculpting department, so have to look over that. I sculpted over the feet to make the boots. Drilled a hole in the right hand to insert the axe. Made it from a dowel rod and magic putty. I used rubber bands for the boot wraps and the shoulder straps and on top of his guantlets which were made from vinyl superglued to his forearms. The belt was vinyl also and the buckle was just a cut out square peice of vinyl painted up. The tunics(or skirt) were pieces of a shower curtain. I primered everything black and then handpainted and drybrushed the whole thing. I didn't use the airbrush during the painting process because it was in the lower digits and below with the wind chill when I was painting that I didn't feel like hooking it up. I just used a technique of "how to paint like you're using an airbrush when you're not!" It's pretty simple to get the fades on the skin and wherever you need to and make it look like it's been done with an airbrush by using washes and thinned paint. You can even use airbrush paint to do that even if you don't have one...IMAGINE THAT!?
