Caliban first appeared in Uncanny X-Men #148 (August 1981) and is a founding member of the Morlocks, a group of disenfranchised mutants who live in the sewers and abandoned subway tunnels beneath New York City. With his mutant ability of being able to psionically sense other mutants from miles away Caliban played an important role in forming and expanding the Morlock community.
