Lion-O 2011 Custom Action Figure

Custom #:35681
Name:Lion-O 2011
Custom Type:Action Figure
Toy Series:Thundercats
Creator:Darththomas
Date Added:January 6, 2012
Base Figure:Movie masters Dark Knight survival suit Bruce Wayne
Height:5.75 inches
Hot on the heels of the awesome Thundercats Ho! competition I decided I needed a Lion-O to go with my Panthro. When I first got this figure I was quite happy with it but the niggles soon started setting in. The black joints, the super wide shoulders and that dang awful mid torso articulation started to really grate on me. Then I saw Boskoes amazing update and it proved to me this guy can look so much better. A couple days later I was browsing round Toys R Us and they had these movie masters for five quid each. I picked two of the up, Bruce and a Harvey Dent not really knowing what I would do with them. I got home and it hit me, Bruce just had to be Lion-O, I stood them next to each other and bang!! perfect scale match, work began and here's the recipe.

Recipe:
Head = 2011 Bandai Lion-O - dremmel to fit

Torso = Movie Masters Dark Knight Bruce Wayne Survival suit - fully sculpted armour with twistie ties for the trims to give nice clean edges.

Straps over shoulders = 2011 Bandai Lion-O - sanded real thin, I also sculpted the tiny sleeves of his undershirt.

Shoulder Armour = 2011 Bandai Lion-O - attached via a twistie tie secured to the pauldron then inserted into a hole drilled in the torso.

Arms and hands = 2011 Bandai Lion-O - sanded down black discs and filled all joint holes, no more nasty black bits.

Belt = 2011 Bandai Lion-O

Crotch and upper legs = Movie Masters Dark Knight Bruce Wayne Survival suit - sculpted over detail on the crotch and sculpted pant folds etc. Slight mod of the knee joints.

Lower legs = 2011 Bandai Lion-O - slight mod to fit upper leg pegs, widened holes. Sanded down raised areas around pegs and filled in joint holes. Sculpted lower straps.

Weapons = 2011 Bandai Lion-O - drilled out holes in each claw shield so the eye of Thundera is visible whilst the sword is in its holster.

Paints = Games Workshop and sealed with superglue and Games Workshop Satin Purity seal.

Be sure to check out the workstation for a few WIPs on this guy and a pic of the original figure I used.

I do plan to do the rest of the cats once I get a hold of the new 6" ones but for now it's back to "the Collection", yup, that means more MOTU.

Thanks for looking and I hope you all enjoy my first custom of 2012, Happy New Year everyone!!

Cheers matey, what bugs me is that Bandai could easily make this a reality but they just keep on getting it wrong
TheGr8One - Monday, January 9, 2012
Wow! I haven't seen the new show yet but always see the toys everywhere. Not really a fan of the new look but yours look million miles ahead of the factory version!
Darththomas - Tuesday, January 10, 2012
Thanks matey, I wasn't really a fan of the new cats to begin with but after watching the first season my mind soon changed, you should definitely check it out if you get the chance. It's quite far removed from the original series but I think it's awesome!!
suprasizeme - Saturday, January 7, 2012

kngfu - Saturday, January 7, 2012
I just got one of those Lion-O figures and he looks awful compared to your reworking. Great work as always.
Darththomas - Sunday, January 8, 2012
Cheers mate, I liked my retail one for the first few weeks but like I said the niggles soon set in, I think if I do end up buying the others it will only be to customize them.

RedRebelCustoms - Friday, January 6, 2012
We may have to change your title from MOTU Master to Beast Master. Lorimar, Filmation, Telepicture Master just doesn't have the same ring to it!
Darththomas - Sunday, January 8, 2012
Haha don't do that I like my current title . Ta for the comment bud!
Shinigami - Friday, January 6, 2012
Superb. I'd buy a figure looking like that.
Darththomas - Sunday, January 8, 2012
Thank you muchly!!
Avid_Dabbler_Cadabra - Friday, January 6, 2012
Beautiful work - just too bad you couldn't have submitted this for the past TC contest - this custom would've definitely pushed the bar significantly higher.
Darththomas - Sunday, January 8, 2012
Yeah I did start him before the deadline but it was only like two days, I did hold misguided hope he would get finished. Still managed to get one entry though, thanks for the comment man!!
bobtheodd - Friday, January 6, 2012
Lot of work to make the figure how is should have been in the first place. Nice work as always, dude.
Darththomas - Sunday, January 8, 2012
Thanks dude, I agree why can't they just make quality products for us?
Cosmic Fantasy Customs - Friday, January 6, 2012
supremely masterful, love the fig and the ingenious idea of twisty ties, the look fantastic and the fig. can't wait for more of the cats and your motu collection. you are a big inspiration and always look forward to your work.
Darththomas - Sunday, January 8, 2012
Cheers buddy, kinda throwing a few ideas around for Mumm-Ra but I'm not too sure if they'll work out at the mo.
Cosmic Fantasy Customs - Sunday, January 8, 2012
any ideas you want to toss around don't hesitate. are your thinking his mummy form or his powerful form?
Darththomas - Sunday, January 8, 2012
Most definitely his all powerful form, I'll prolly post some wips soon after my next MOTU probably either Teela or Buzz off.
Cosmic Fantasy Customs - Monday, January 9, 2012
can't wait for all of the above.
bet1 - Friday, January 6, 2012

Darththomas - Sunday, January 8, 2012
Thanks man, it was worth it, I actually like him now
pulpyfiction - Friday, January 6, 2012
Completely ingenious dude! This looks great! I can't gush enough how well this works!
Darththomas - Sunday, January 8, 2012
Cheers dude, I usually use earphone wire (inspired by madtinker) but I figured the silver inside the twisties would help preven paint rub, it did
