Frankenstein's Monster Custom Action Figure

Custom #:37984
Name:Frankenstein's Monster
Custom Type:Action Figure
Toy Series:Monsters
Date Added:March 31, 2012
Base Figure:DCU Grundy BAF
Height:8.75 inches
Articulation:41 points
The living creature created by Victor Frankenstein said to be made from the assemblage of multiple human corpses, as well as animal, plant, and other forms of dead tissue. Sometimes referred to a "flesh golem"

When I first got the Grundy parts I wanted to do the Hulk as he appeared in the second half of the first issue, but the more I looked at it, I kept seeing the wretch Victor Frankenstein created. Then in a used toy shop in Hamilton, I found a broken toy of Frankenstein's monster, and that completely sealed the deal.

The head was severed from the original figure, and filled with apoxy to fit perfectly to the Grundy body. I found I had to give the Grundy base figure a quick, complete sanding so it would take paint, including the rubber jacket (DCU capes and coats are the worst for taking paints!).
I did a base coat for each colour, then dry brush for detail, and then dark washes, and topped with one last dry brush for highlights. Then he needed to be dirtied up. Layers of extra browns to get the dirty look of his clothes and shoes. He's a mess from living in hiding because, well he's a monster.

-I forgot to mention I had a cheat to complete this baf, can you catch it?

Thanks for taking the time to check him out!

Dang Pulpy, I just came across this Frankenstein's Monster in a google search, and it is fantastic. I was all excited after reading your description to run down and post how you "cheated" but then I saw that it was already discussed, long ago. Anyhow, awesome work man, looks good from head to toe!
ayelid - Tuesday, July 10, 2012

I'm sorry I haven't been able to comment on this earlier (holiday) but now I can so I just popped in to say E-P-I-C!!! Thanks for letting me see this

As for "Cheating" to complete the CNC I think you may have sculpted the right arm
pulpyfiction - Sunday, April 8, 2012
Hey Darth! Been wondering where you've been kicking around! Thanks for the post, and the kind words that fill it!
Well you're on to part of what I did to cheat, I did sculpt the forearms to make them the same width on both sides of both arms, using filling the peg holes as the incentive. The reason being I used the same arm. They both are the left arm. I just swapped it and flipped it around for the right. I dremil and sanded the hole in the sleeve on the bicep, and did different jacket wrinkles on the forearms.
The left fits and works perfectly as the right arm, and it's a lot easier and cheaper to get! I was going to dremil a fer more wrinkles into the shoulder, but I thought it looked pretty good as is, and I didn't want to ruin that.

Darththomas - Sunday, April 8, 2012
Well it looks great, I only noticed coz I think it looks better than the factory arm
pulpyfiction - Sunday, April 8, 2012
Thanks AGAIN DT! This was one of those things I agonized about. I really just couldn't get the right arm for a decent price or trade, and when I checked if the left would work, everything became clear. I think it worked out, so I'm happy

CAb00se - Wednesday, April 4, 2012
Are those Savage Dragon hands?? is that how you had to cheat?
pulpyfiction - Wednesday, April 4, 2012
Yes they are savage dragons hands, but that's not the cheat. It has to do with the baf parts.
Bushinryus40th - Wednesday, April 4, 2012
Spectacular reworking of Grundy, this looks Amazing! And the paints on this guy you totally killed it! Awesome work!
pulpyfiction - Wednesday, April 4, 2012
Thanks a lot Bushinryus40th! The paints took a bunch of time, so I really appreciate you noticing it. It makes the effort all the more worth while.

Mint Condition Customs - Monday, April 2, 2012
I've loved monsters since I was a kid, especially the classic Universal monsters and I love even more when there are new and interesting takes on the characters. Let me say that this is a brilliant custom. Truly outstanding. You should make your own Dr. Frankenstein to go with him.

Oh, but I do have to say the standard "How dare you use a Solomon Grundy figure!", haha. :P
pulpyfiction - Monday, April 2, 2012
HA HA HA! If I had another Grundy I'd carve him into a hulk! And I'd do it without flinching! All kidding aside, I have to admit it's an awesome figure, and that totally played into why I wanted to do this.

Thanks C.V.! Keep up the Hard work on Mint Condition!

suprasizeme - Sunday, April 1, 2012
I am so glad to see new work from you and boy was it worth the wait!!! I think you made the right choice in choosing to make Frankenstein's Monster instead of the Hulk, because this is absolutely perfect. And the paints are fantastic, love that dirty look you gave your monstrous creation. The funny thing is I was thinking of creating a Frankenstein's Monster custom for the Fairy tale contest but now that I've seen yours I am going to have to pick another character because yours is the best.
pulpyfiction - Sunday, April 1, 2012
Dude a Frankie from you would look awesome! Just do it in your style, and it's a guaranteed hit! I'd like to see it for sure!
Also thanks for the support on the Frankenstein over the Hulk, I've done a few Hulks, and have never touched one of these, so it was a nice change!
Thanks for the thoughts!
G_Rantula - Saturday, March 31, 2012
YES,YES,YES!!! This is an AWESOME piece. The paint apps on the coat and pants are SPECTACULAR. And the Savage Dragon hands work wonderfully. GREAT WORK!!!
pulpyfiction - Sunday, April 1, 2012
Thanks, Thanks, Thanks!!! I appreciate people catching on the paintwork, this is one of those pieces I didn't know when to stop on the paints, and just kept on with the layers, partially because dcu figures need a lot of paint love too, but I think you would get the paint love after the job you put into that awesome b.a.t. concept figure you posted!
CAb00se - Saturday, March 31, 2012
dude! this is frickin fantasmagorical!!! top notch work all around man.
pulpyfiction - Sunday, April 1, 2012
Thanks CAbOOse! You seem to rock out the monsterous characters when you want to, so much so your Motaro was mentioned to inspire LC's concept for him in his description! Means a lot man!
fastfreddie - Saturday, March 31, 2012
This is so BODACIOUS that if I had this figure I would never want to part with it! I have an extra Grundy, but I don't know what I want to do with it yet. This is really right there among the top Monsters I have seen! This and your Hulk(s) the DC CNC and Ferrigno, are my favs to date! Did you put staples around his wrists too?
pulpyfiction - Sunday, April 1, 2012
AW DANG IT! I forgot the wrist staples, and I had made them out of styrene! My wife showed me where I left them to dry downstairs and forgot about it!
Thanks for the comments, I really appreciate your take on some customs I've done that are some of my top favourite pieces to make! always a fan of your work sir!
