The first "update" to my MOTU Hybrid line, today I'm posting some old familiar faces . . . and some new familiars! And by that, I mean pets. Animal sidekicks. Aren't they just adorable?

First on the list, Screeech the falcon. A pack-in with the NECA Evil-Lyn mini-statue, Screeech was originally permanently attached to his perch. When I removed him, he couldn't free-stand on his own. I had to hollow him out and weight with lead fishing sinkers so that he could sit on his own feet. It was a real pain finding the perfect balance point, and I was ultimately forced to sacrifice my plan to make his weapon harness removeable, but at least he's now perfectly balanced. So long as he's got a level surface, he'll stand at attention all day long.

The baby Cringer was a stroke of good fortune. I found a tiny tiger figurine at the local Goodwill and grabbed him right up. All it took was some paint and patience, and Prince Adam had a cute Cringer kitten companion to cuddle.

In the 2002 cartoon, Kobra Kahn had a pet lizard, Fang. The figure didn't come with one (although the new MOTU Classics figure did), so I needed to make my own. I found a tiny iguana from an Imaginext playset, cut him in half, lengthened him, and added a pair of legs and fangs using LocTite epoxy putty. Paint and done!

Finally, I wanted to show you all my updated Man-at-Arms, Stratos, and Kobra Kahn. After the praise I received for Clawful's paint wash, I decided to revisit a few of my previous figures for some touch-ups. Just a subtle wash to bring out the texture of Duncan's armor, Stratos' feathers, and Kahn's scales, nothing fancy, but they turned out great. As I've said before, I don't like washes, but I concede that it does actually make them pop just that little extra bit.

By the power of Grayskull!

love each one bud, they are excellent. I also agree with you about figs coming with extras, that is one thing I think is lacking in new figs so much. keep up the greatness.

Thanks for always checking out my work!

RE Extras: A little rant on the state of the modern toy industry.

I gotta say, I'm kinda done with the whole BAF thing. Sure, it was great back in the day with Galactus and the Sentinel, and even Giant Man was pretty awesome. But Apocalypse was just unnecessary, and now most of the BAFs are no bigger than your average Hulk figure. Now what do we have? A friggin' BAT SIGNAL? Seriously? With an alternate "broken lens" piece? You're joking, right? That's called a "playset," and it's SUPPOSED to be sold separately for $15 . . . oh, wait, that's what you're charging for the REGULAR FIGURES. It's gotten a little out of hand and pointless.

You want my money? Bring the figures back down to $10-$12 and take OUT the BAF piece and sell the whole thing as a separate, premium figure for $30 (or even $40) or so. That way, the fans get the characters they want, they don't have to buy some unnecessary crap that the company only produced because they need to round out the wave (seriously, I NEED another Wolverine, do I? Fans were clamoring for one more Lantern repaint?), the toy companies don't have to waste money on peg warmers, they get positive press from the price drop, everyone goes home happy.

Really NEED a pack-in extra to justify those high prices? Something RELEVANT. The "Legendary Riders" concept was a GREAT idea, if only you'd done characters that ACTUALLY HAD VEHICLES. Why did I need a crappy air scooter for Scarlet Witch? Ghost Rider with his bike, Xavier with his chair, these are good vehicles! Or here's a thought: Build-A-Vehicle instead of Figure. Give me the parts to make a Quinjet! Let's make a 1/12 scale Batmobile! Toy companies don't make stand-alone vehicles for these 6" figures anymore, so let's buy the individual parts to make them. THAT'S a pack-in I'd waste cash on!

And one last thing, MATTEL . . . It's all well and good to include loads of extra weapons and spare heads and little animal sidekicks and whatnot in your figures. But if you're charging @#$%ING $27 A PIECE, I'm still not going to buy them! Take your subscription service and SHOVE IT.

I am in total agreement with that. I do not want every character or a bazillion of the same one. I would love to see the prices drop and the special fig be more, but they should be taller, bigger or something special. or if they continue to do build parts a vehicle would be perfect or bases/dioramams.

as for motuc, I never collected them cause you have to join a club and then pay a fortune and you have no options. bad idea for collectors who only want to collect their favorite characters. but I would love to get a castle grayskull if it is proportionally correct.

Weeeelllll . . . I am planning on building a Grayskull eventually . . . if I can find a cost effective way of doing so. And by "cost effective," I mean "in the $30-40 range, with only moderate time investment." I believe it might actually be WAY more doable than you might think. The key is finding broken vintage castles, and simply "up-scaling" as it were. I have ideas, anyway. And If I do figure it out, making two probably wouldn't be too much of a stretch. Definitely worth a certain Juggernaut and an Iron Man figure I've kept in the back of my mind! I'll keep you posted!

Clever. Something you don't see very often, but logical and fun.

Thanks. I've always said, it's not enough to just make the figures. Real toy series include all the extras as well. As a kid, Ghostbusters was one of my favorite toys because, in addition to the figure and weapons, they each came with a pack-in ghost, so you got the heroes AND the villains all at once! It's a philosophy of toy making that I still adhere to, and I wish Mattel and Hasbro and the other big names would follow suit.
