In Season 2 Hawk is is going to be killed by the council for crimes against humans. Buck Rogers pleads with the council to spare his life, which they do. He then takes to Buck's side as a companion and warrior in the search for more Hawk people along with Buck in space. I would consider him at sidekick at this point.
