Custom #:41601
Name:6" DC Universe Classics Style Batman beyond
Custom Type:Action Figure
Toy Series:DC Universe
Creator:ayelid
Date Added:August 8, 2012
Base Figure:6" DC Universe Classics style Young Justice Superboy and Marvel Legends Mandarin
Height:6.00 inches
Completion Time:40.00 hours
Articulation:40 points
Batman Beyond is built mostly using a 6" Young Justice Superboy figure (the one in the white costume). The head was sculpted over Superboy's, but about the only thing that remains from Superboy is the mouth. I sculpted over the Superboy hea
d instead of starting from scratch because I wanted that good attachment and articulation it was manufactured with... I didn't want to bother with machining out a new peg hole in a resin casted head this time. The entire Superboy figure was given a dye bath before painting, so that the points of articulation would look like they were all cast in black plastic. It's Superboy's head, shoulders, forearms, upper and lower torso and upper legs and Marvel Legends Mandarin's upper arms, elbows, knees, lower legs and feet and Marvel Legends Wolverine's hands. Quite a bit of sanding and modifying was neccessary to get parts to line up right, but some parts such as Mandarin's upper arms popped into the Superboy shoulder pegs as if they were manufactured for them. The chest was smoothed down using an epoxy resin product called Magic Sculp and a lot of sanding afterwards so that the emblem would lay flat on it. The emblem itself was carefully cut from a rubber vinyl like material. The wings are craft foam; the most suitable material I could find to use. They are held in place with a screw, which allows them to be poseable or removed.

So, there you are... an accurate DC Universe Classics Batman Beyond with double jointed knees and elbows (as well as ankle rockers, articulated toes and wrists), poseable wings and correct height and scale.

The one thing the figure CAN'T do is hold batarangs with the closed fists, but I'm thinking of adding an extra pair of swappable open hands. The Superboy forearms had to be modified to hold the pegs from the Wolverine hands. This was done b
y hollowing out the Superboy wrist pegs... they were originally going to be glued to the Wolverine wrist pegs, but because the Superboy forearms and wrist pegs are both PVC plastic, and the Wolverine wrist pegs are harder ABS plastic, the super glue I used adhered the hollowed out Superboy wrist pegs to the Superboy forearm cavities but wouldn't stick to the Wolverine wrist pegs. So, it's still a snug fit, just not exactly as I planned it.

Hey,

Just tried to look you up under the forum member list, no luck. What's your email address again? There was a destination listed in your response. And due forgive my persistence, but this is simply a beautiful, well executed custom that I'm insanely impressed by. THE best representation of the character.

I posted the email in another comment.
StrangePlanet - Monday, August 13, 2012
Excellent in every way. The toy I wanted to buy but was never made. Fixes all the things wrong with the DCUC version.
Great job on the head, excellent combo of parts. Everything looks like it belongs together. Great smooth paint apps.
This is such a great look that's just animated enough, and with the right articulation and scale. Best BB ever.

Thank you StrangePlanet for taking the time to give my work such a great compliment. Maybe at some point in the new Batman Unlimited line or the sub thing they might take another shot at Batman Beyond.

Do you have an email? I tried to send you a PM but I can't find you under the member list.
ayelid - Monday, August 13, 2012
I see that users can PM each other but it has to be done through the Forums. I suppose you can try to email me at customized_BB at email dot com about it.

Are you interested in celling this piece of awesome? Or, perhaps willing to do another one?
ayelid - Monday, August 13, 2012
Lol, thanks . I'm not sure. That might require a little thinking about on my part. It is possible that I might be able to do another one. I am certainly willing to discuss it.

I think the ears are a little high but its amazng what you have done great job I would give it a 5/5 stars
ayelid - Saturday, August 11, 2012
Thanks man. I agree, the ears could probably be reduced about a third and look ok. I wanted to accentuate that particular ear shape from the cartoon .

This is the only batman Beyond figure that I have ever seen that's actually perfect! And I've even made one of them! It looks like it came right out of the tv. Good work

This is probably the most accurate Batman Beyond figure I've ever seen. Such an amazing job on this guy, he really looks like he was opened right out of a package. Sounds like it was a lot of work but it definitely paid off, I would be proud to own this!!!!

fastfreddie - Thursday, August 9, 2012
Looks very, very good! One question: How do you get the dye bath to work? I tried dyeing a figure in the Black RIT dye and it didn't do very well for me. It did turn the sculpted areas black, but basically barely tinted the white base body I was using(HML Wendigo)
ayelid - Thursday, August 9, 2012
Thanks man. The reason why that particular figure didn't do well in the dye bath might be because of paint applications on parts of the figure. Sometimes the painted areas won't stain well, just the bare softer PVC plastic areas. The harder ABS plastics probably won't stain very dark. It might work better if you bring the dye to a boil, place the figure in the bath for a few seconds while stirring it, but begin to turn the heat down to almost off not long after you place the figure in the dye because the heat can quickly melt the harder plastics. It's really tricky to get good, consistent results.
NeCrollector - Wednesday, August 8, 2012
Excellent rendition of Batman Beyond!!! I, for one, love the long ears...they look really 'batty', really cool!
ayelid - Thursday, August 9, 2012
XD Thanks man.
JeddTheJedi - Wednesday, August 8, 2012
One of the very best Batman Beyond customs I've seen! The blend of comic book six inch figure and animated series-style look is done very good, it's a great balance and doesn't look over the top. The details are clean and the head especially has this very dynamic look to it. Brilliant!
ayelid - Thursday, August 9, 2012
Thank you JTJ. That was exactly what I was trying for, a happy medium somewhere between the animated series style look and the DCUC comic book style six inch figure format.
toxinvenom - Wednesday, August 8, 2012
No way, nice bat ears! This is how I would want mine, just like Batman Beyond in the comics, exaggerated ears and really skinny. I was trying to figure out what head that was and the ears but you sculpted it. Definitely one of my favorite Batman Beyond customs. PS- How do you dye a figure and what do you use? Paint rub is a big problem for me, any tips would be appreciated...
ayelid - Thursday, August 9, 2012
Thanks for the huge compliment toxinvenom. Reading someone say that they would want to buy a factory made figure the way I customized one is about as great a compliment as one can get in this hobby. Please see my reply to fastfreddie's comment for some suggestions on the dye bath process.
Batman1016 - Wednesday, August 8, 2012
I think the ears are JUST a bit too long, but beyond that (get it?), I think he's pretty much perfect! Almost NOBODY remembers to make Terry properly slender and lanky, and you pulled it off brilliantly!
ayelid - Thursday, August 9, 2012
Thanks man!
