Before becoming The Punisher, he was a US Marine, a war veteran.
After being intrigued by the military lifestyle for years, especially having been inspired by Sal Buvoli, at seventeen he left school and enrolled in the Marines. He graduated boot camp having completed his Basic Training and then enlisted for further training in Infantry, Reconnaissance and then in Sniper Schools becoming a Recon Marine, Frank was able to attain dockets that would permit him to go through U.S. Army Airborne School and U.S. Navy Underwater Demolition Team training, becoming qualified as a Navy SEAL.
Frank and his wife Maria, who married young, had their first child - Lisa Castle - in 1967, and then Frank Castle Jr was born in 1971 before Frank changed his name from Castiglione to Castle in order to illegally sign up for what would be his third tour of duty. Castle served 4 tours of duty as a marine in the Vietnam war beginning in 1968 and ending in 1971.
Upon returning to his family, Frank feared the cost of the war he fought in, afraid that his future as a family man would never last and was just the precursor to something ultimately dark and terrible. Sure enough, fate proved him right when his family was gunned down in a failed mob hit. Before that though, Frank's heroism in the line of duty had collectively earned him the Medal of Honor, the Navy Cross, 3 times the Silver Star and Bronze Stars, 4 times the Purple Heart, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He had returned to the military in 1976 as a USMC Special Forces Instructor.
