I have checked it before contest. Vegeta's first appearance was in Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine on December 19, 1988. Wikipedia says first DBZ episode was premiered in Japan on Fuji Television on April 26, 1989, so I believe it still counts

. However You're right if You mean English version of DBZ which was aired in 1996
