Conan the Barbarian, what an awesome character and one of the most popular of his archetype. I had the Legendary Comic Book Heroes Conan but he just didn’t look “beefed up” enough for me.
I started by using the parts fro the LCBH figure I did like and that were very MARVEL Conan: the head, cloak, loincloth, boots, arms and weapons. Looking for a good body I found a wrestling figure on sale at WalMart that was 6 inches and had more “meat” on him and that same articulation Conan originally had. The LCBH pieces fit very well onto the new torso and legs. I was so glad I didn’t have to do any cracking of the body to make stuff fit better. All I really had to alter was the loincloth shape under the belt as to not limit the leg articulation.
The only major sculpting I did were the nipples. Which are very hard to do right. After a couple tries I got him squared away nicely. As for paint apps I wanted something dirty and sweaty, like a fantasy painting. All skin areas were layered with several different shades of Tamiya red, browns and Caucasian skin-tones to give him a “I have just been in a very long battle” look. I even added dirt and blood stains on the boots and costume, to make them blend together better.
For the base I wanted more bloody fantasy so I used a McFarlane’s Dragon base. I added blood and a broken helmet from Wrarrl on the base. I set out to make a fantasy painting f everyone’s favorite barbarian come to life and I believe I accomplished that with lots of blood, sweat and tears!
