I've always wanted to make a "Masters of the Universe" Movie Style "He-Man" figure, but could never quite find the right base figure. I was thrilled when NECA released the "Drago" figure, which this time actually looked a bit like Dolph Lundgren. I've seen a few of these done already (kudos to those who had the creative eye for this as well), but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to make my own. So, here is what I did:
The figure base didn't require much except for new hands. Let me tell you, this was probably the HARDEST part of doing this project. I needed hands that could hold the sword and that were molded in the proper scale. In the end, the winning hands came from a NECA T-1000 steel mill figure.
I used a LOT of epoxy to build on this figure. The "Drago" hair was dremeled down and the new hair was sculpted completely from epoxy. The arm and leg bands...epoxy. All the armor (emblem, buckle, shoulder pads, knee pads, gauntlet) were made from epoxy as well as both his blades. The sword is made up of a tongue depressor covered with epoxy and sanded into shape.
His harness straps are simply leather lace with a few brass rings for buckles. I also used a flat piece of leather to create the gun holster as well as the sword sheath.
Everything sculpted from epoxy was then painted along with a seal-coat. The blaster was simply a small plastic gun that I've had for years and finally found a use for :cP. The final piece was the cape which was cut from a thin red fabric that has a nice "hanging" quality to it. The cape is removable by two small wire hooks glued to the corners. These hook to two more brass rings molded into the shoulder pads.
There it is! My recipe for a Dolph Lundgren "Masters of the Universe" He-Man figure.
