El Vejigante Custom Action Figure

Custom #:45828
Name:El Vejigante
Custom Type:Action Figure
Toy Series:Marvel
Date Added:January 5, 2013
Base Figure:DCUC Green Lantern Medphyll
Height:7.00 inches
Based on a folkloric character from Puerto Rico, often seen in Puerto Rican parades, this rendition of El Vejigante appeared in Marvel's one-shot "FANTASTIC FOUR IN...ATAQUE DEL M.O.D.O.K.". I love the costume design by comic book artist Juan Doe as it showcases Puerto Rico's flag.

Being a Christmas gift for my pal, Paul, of Puerto Rican descent, I wanted to customize a Puerto Rican patriotic superhero for him. This was the most visually stunning one I could find.

Body - Green Lantern Medphyll with Red Lantern Skallox feet
Head - Redakai Gold Bruticon head with fodder pieces for horns. Sculpted over most of the head.
Cape - After 2 unsuccessful attempts of having paint flake off from 2 different capes, I went with creating a satin cape. The first satin cape turned out terrible so I had to draw out the schematics on paper then transfer them unto the satin fabric. I added thin metal wires near the edges for articulation. Added blue polyester ribbon near the bottom of the cape. First time creating a cape from scratch, but I'm happy with the results.
Completed 1/5/2013

Thanks for looking, Realmers!
I hope you all like him.

This is great! I love the odd head shape and the colors are awesome! I noticed what you wrote about the flaking paint on the cape. I can't remember exactly where I saw it, but I think it's on Jin Saotome's Customs website. If I'm correct, he has a tutorial on painting and mentions how the usual acrylic paints don't work well on soft plastic like capse. I wish I could remember what the paint solution to this was, but I know there is one that involves using a different kind of paint. If it wasn't on Jin Saotome's page, it may have been on Kyle Robinson's. besides the tutorials here, I think they're the only customizers pages I've seen with tutorials like that so far.

Thank you so much, Davey. I'll have to revisit both Jin's and Kyle's sites once more. It's been a while. By the time I started running into issues with the 2nd cape, I took it as a sign to try something new. I'm glad I did as I learned a lot by creating the cape out of satin. Still, I do want to revisit those capes in the future and 'conquer' them.

Wow! Fantastic work (pun absolutely intended since he 1st appeared in a FF special 1-shot)! The only critique I could make is that you're missing the 2 largest horns from the side of his head and you left the Green Lantern ring on but that's seriously nitpicking and really didn't effect my scoring. All in all great job. 5 *'s from me.
NeCrollector - Thursday, January 24, 2013
Thanks for your feedback, my friend It's always a pleasure to hear from you. I hear ya about the two horns...they're there, but not as pronounced as in the reference art. I really enjoyed customizing this character and hope to give him another try in the future. If I do, I'll make sure to give him bigger horns.
Even though he doesn't have a ring in the reference art, I took some artistic freedom & left the GL ring on. It's hard to see from the pics, but I sculpted over the GL emblem of the ring, sanded it down and painted a tiny white star. Thanks again for your vote, brother.
SansPedes - Thursday, January 24, 2013
Brother your work always floors me, no question. I absolutely respect artistic license so I'd love to see a pic of the ring to see what you did with it. As a guy who usually has a few rings on I approve but maybe painting it gold or silver would tie it in a bit better. Just a thought. As for the horns, lets just say they grow bigger when he gets excited By the by, the sculpt work on that head is EPIC! And the WIP's are absolutely enlightening. As tough as the competition was in this contest, I feel you were robbed.
NeCrollector - Friday, January 25, 2013
You're too kind, brother. The competition was fierce and, as always, I'm just honored to be participating in these cool contests with such amazing, talented artists. I can't promise anything, but let me see if I can squeeze in a small pic of the ring, perhaps with the WIP pics. Till next time, SP.

That head is very nice. Did a great job of capturing a unique likeness. And that cape is cool. Good job!
