This Mastermind figure is part of a 'Brotherhood of Evil Mutants' set. I wanted to make the original founding members based on the First Appearance of 'The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants' in Uncanny X-Men #4, but with some liberties taken with their "looks". Mastermind was made using a Sleepy Hollow-Johnny Depp-Ichabod Crane figure as the base, with part of a Spawn cape used for the top part of his coat (removable). His facial hair is sculpted. Mastermind is the Master of Illusion and Mental manipulation and as a sidenote to any other use, almost constantly uses his powers to make himself appear more physically attractive than he really is. For this reason I wanted to have his custom be kind of in-between what he looks like when he is less and more attractive, and ideally hoped that he would look more or less attractive depending on the angle he was viewed from. Hope you guys like him!

This one is definitely in disguise. I remember certain artists drawing him as a much older and very ugly, ugly man (I'm thinking it was either artists Don Heck or Arnold Drake I am thinking of) who was scamming on everyone, and I mean, EVERYONE around him. He was visually much like a aging Vincent Price gothic figure. Then he reappears much later in the X-Men titles as this very theatrical youthful erudite. I always thought this one had everyone else hypnotized to some varying degrees. he always struck me as the Dorian Gray of the group. A character who has much more to hide than the others,.. and works very hard to do just that. Davey Blaze has him striking in a classical pose looking very dapper and buttoned up tighly right up to his chin. OH YEAH!! he definitely has a lot that he is hiding!!

Thanks! You're quite right about the looks of this one! One of the things (actually the number one thing) that I found interesting about this character is that he used his powers, in a constant unending way, no matter what else he was using them for, foremost to make everyone around him think he was better looking than he really is. That's why sometimes he is drawn ugly (like his true appearance , by like Jack Kirby) or really handsome (how other '"affected" people were viewing him. I found it so great to see a mutant using his powers for such a real, human reason based on insecurity. I always thought that insecurity written into him was just brilliant.

Genius use of the Ichabod Crane figure for Mastermind!

Thanks so much, NeCro!!! I'm glad you think it was an apt. choice! It was a touch call of wether to make him as he appears when drawn as more "good-looking" or "less-attractive".

I like this one best of all, Mastermind is seen so rarely and this is such a cool take on the Wyngarde style mastermind. Excellent work!

Thanks a lot man, I appreciate that a lot! I'm really glad that you appreciate that about Mastermind, because I knew this might be kind of a thankless addition to the Team, even though he is an original member, because he isn't a particularly well known character. I really did want to find a nice middle ground between his 1st appearance look, and his more fashionable "Hellfire Club" look I'm glad you like the style choice!
