Here's Groot! Groot is known nowadays as a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Groot has been in comics for a long time... Before Marvel, there was Atlas Comics. Each month, Atlas comics featured Godzilla or King Kong sort of characters that mankind had to find some way to deal with. Groot first appeared in one of those comics, along with such colorful characters as The Blip, and Mummex!
Groot is built using a combination of a 12" Icons series Human Torch and a Lord of the Rings Treebeard figure. I like that I can display him with either 6" Marvel Legends or 3 3/4" Marvel Universe figures.
A lot of work went into making Groot a sturdy, functional figure. His legs swivel at the calf, but he has no seperate feet. He would probably withstand being slammed into a wall, but I'm too fond of him to try to find out!
I sculpted his likeness and costume, or my depiction of his likeness, anyway. Some of the limbs I sculpted, and some come from the Treebeard figure. I have seen a few spectacular homemade Groot figures, and I wanted mine to look sort of humanoid but yet have some definite alien tree person features. I resculpted some of his face after beginning to paint it, because I decided that it was not treelike enough.
The nice thing about building him on the Icons Human Torch figure is that the torch's costume is dark blue, which means there is no difference in color at the articulation points. His belt pouches come from a vintage 1960s GI Joe figure! I included some work in progress pictures to try to help illustrate some of the construction process.
You might notice that Groot's shirt is missing the buttons it is often depicted with. That is because, I can't decide what size I want the buttons to be lol.
