Doctor Death is Batman's oldest villain, first introduced in the Detective 29 (1939) as a typical mad scientist--monocle,white smock, and all. He's been re-imagined several times, most recently in Scott Snyder's Batman Year Zero storyline as yes, a mad scientist but with more monstrous looks. I first encountered Karl Hellfern in the 1980s in a two-part story written by Gerry Conway and drawn by the late great Gene Colan, and it's this version that I decided to tackle. One of the other reasons I decided on this rendition is b/c I had an old Prof Xavier wheelchair lying around last used when I made Oracle (now that she is Batgirl I had no need for it)

I used a DCUC Sandman body since this figure had the best leg articulation to sit on a wheelchair. The head is a heavily re-sculpted LOTR Eomer and his quilt was made from Sculpey. I decided on a different color scheme from that shown in the comics. In the story he appears in a tux in one scene and in a trenchcoat in another. Since the man is not a typical costumed villain, that gave me free reign to dress him up however I liked and I thought that this color scheme would be a departure from the usual black/grey/blue pallate you find in many Batman villains.
