![[Peanuts Snoopy, Woodstock, and Patty with Doghouse] From the Peanuts gang, Snoopy and his doghouse, with Woodstock and Patty. From the Christmas Pageant set where Snoopy is a sheep, and Woodstock is "baby Jesus".
Snoopy is a simple repaint with a little S tail added. I laid on the acrylic paint thick to resemble fur. He has a coat hanger rod in his foot through the roof and a block underneath.
Woodstock got new wings and feet from scrap, then a clear plastic wire to hold him aloft.
The doghouse roof came from some pre-cut wooden model. The walls are tongue depressors from the craft store cut with a small X-Acto miter box (90 or 45 degrees). The doghouse is usually all orange in old Sunday strips, but I added white for variety. The name over the door is styled after one comic that showed it.
Patty (the original, not Peppermint Patty) was a Lucy keychain in a winter coat and beret. I took her apart, ground the coat round, and jammed down a water bottle neck for the skirt. I also cut the coat arms down to short sleeve](userimages/customs/36000/35757-1.jpg) Peanuts Snoopy, Woodstock, and Patty with Doghouse | ![[Asterix Village with Cacofonix's Treehouse] The village of Asterix, the Gaulish warrior, star of graphic novels, cartoons, movies, and his own theme park. I've already entered Asterix's house, so skip that. Cacofonix's treehouse is built on half an Animal Planet tree, with gaps filled with that Concrete Patch. Then a balsa wood frame, distressed craft sticks, then cardboard walls covered with logs and thatch made from weeds found by the side of the road. I stuffed cotton on the backside and soaked in white glue for strength. Painted with acrylics. About 12 inches. The treehouse and house bases nest for a tight fit. The PVC characters came from Canada. Not cheap: $8 apiece. The tallest is 2.75 inches high. The village backdrop is from a sticker book. I might add a cauldron for Getafix and a shield on a platform for Vitalstatistix, but that'll be it, I promise.](userimages/customs/34000/33699-1.jpg) Asterix Village with Cacofonix's Treehouse |
![[Dashiell Bad Horse] Dashiell Bad Horse is another "Scalped" character that will go with the Lincoln Red Crow we did last year. It's a very nice and serious comicbook with great character development. Nice names too :D! This figure was made with the following recipe:
TNA upper half
Buffy shirt
Nick Fury right hand
Bullseye lower part
Punsiher lower legs
Parts put together and wrapped up with a brandnew paintjob. The shirt took the most time to paint, then the tattoos :). His nunchucks is from Ronin given a real metal chain and his gun is not just any random gun... it came from a STEVEN SEAGAL action figure! That has got to count for something! Made as a backdrop to the PVC characters. (Not cheap. $8 apiece from a company in Canada.) Started with three layers of foamboard with cutouts so the photocopied and pasted interior shows through the windows. Glued on the balsa wood frame, distressed, and stained. Made the stones from air-dry clay, hand-fit nice and tight, but they shrank. Filled the gaps with Concrete Patch from Home Depot. Painted the stones, made the door, and laid on branches evened up with fat toothpicks. Made a bench for the window seat. Took forever. The wife's comment? "It's lovely, but shouldn't there be a light inside?" The figures are 2.75 inches, the house 11 inches. (Who knew she had a name?) As you can see, I combined Pepe hugging his tail (Penelope had slipped away?) and a Penelope, cutting away an ugly Pepe as a Foreign Legionnaire. LOTS of cutting. Penelope ended up with Pepe's old tail and a new lower leg. Her whiskers are straight pins. Pepe got a new tail from a hollow plastic and styrofoam. Research showed his tail is freakin' HUGE, like bigger than he is. Then I extended his arms to wrap around her, and gave him a kissy mouth. And bonus, they stand upright just fine because the tail counterbalances her weight!](userimages/customs/32000/31592-1.jpg) Pepe Lew Pew and Penelope the Cat |
![[Tom Taylor] I made this guy for my brother who is going to give him to the writer of the comic he is from. I used Tim Hunter as the base. I started by cutting off his pants cuffs. Then I sculpted his lower pants, hair, sideburns, parts of his face, the front of his shirt, his shirt-collar, and parts of his arms(because Tim's arms were a bit to skimpy). Then I painted him carefully. I had a hard time getting the yellow paint to go on smoothly so I wet-sanded it a bit after it was dry. I made the cat from a random cat toy. I sculpted its head, neck, and a lot of the body. The wings come from a toy swan. I attached the cat to the display base(from a harry potter toy) to make him more stable but Tom Taylor is separate from the base. This guy is a character from "the unwritten". Who drove Race Bannon crazy with her thieving ways and skeevy help. Here Jade fires up at a temple wall to keep natives from skewering Race - after securing her share of loot. The base is some animated Asian female from Treasure Planet, maybe? Jade is Eurasian, so I made her smaller and less curvy than Dave Stevens' classic cover. ![[The Spirit, Comic Accurate Movie Figure] The Spirit Comic Accurate Movie Figure - Created Jan 24, 2011
The movie version of The Spirit is something that most comic fans hate, but I acutally enjoyed. It retained the humor of Will Eisner's groundbreaking comic, but I'll admit the movie wasn't Will Eisner's The Spirit, it was Frank Miller's The Spirit. But I digress. Whatever anyone may feel about the movie, I think a lot of fans agree that the figure based on the character from Mezco is actually really awesome. The detail in the sculpt down to the buttons and seams in the coat are really quite spectacular.
But despite the pros of the figure I have to admit I wasn't a fan of The Spirit's outfit being ALL BLACK in the movie. I don't think it would have been a far stretch for audiences to believe someone could be walking around in a blue suit. So I decided to take the pros of the movie figure and give it the look of the classic version of the Spirit.

![[Crusader Rabbit and Rags the Tiger] You need to be 60 to remember these two. Crusader Rabbit was the first cartoon made for TV (as opposed to theatrical cartoons like Bugs Bunny), in short segments, black and white, then color. Rags the Tiger was added later. CR was a precursor to Rocky & Bullwinkle, with the plucky little brain and the big dumb companion and a villain, Dudley Nightshade (like Snidley Whiplash). Watch shorts on YouTube. Crusader is modded from a PVC Marvin the Martian with Evergreen tubes for ears. I also threaded a brass rod down his arm into his body for the pointing finger. Rags is converted from a screaming Daffy Duck: the eyes and face were an exact match, then I filled in under his duckbill with Bondo and notched in the nose. The body is a sacrified Michigan J. Frog upside down, and the tail is a crazy straw from TRU. Note the characters were designed for easy animating, with few curves and many straight lines, even Rags's stripes. Still, a pain to paint. ![[Tweety Monster] Tweety Bird after ingesting the Doctor Jeckyl / Mister Hyde potion from the cartoon Hyde and Go Tweet. See it on YouTube. Heavy mod of an action figure from Looney Tunes: Back in Action, an amazingly unfunny movie. The figure did not match the prototype. They ended up with a weird rubbery coating so Tweety could open his mouth wide and half-swallow Daffy. So I froze the joints, filled in big gaps, built a throat and tongue, added florist wire whiskers, then coated the body with layers of Bondo from an auto parts store. ($4 a tube, easy to apply and sand, holds paint well - and thanks to whoever suggested it.) I cut the flat feet rounded to match the cartoon and tipped him forward to be more menacing, so glued him to an acrylic panel cut from a CD case. 6 inches tall, a whole lotta yellow.](userimages/customs/25000/24850-1.jpg) Tweety Monster | ![[Ther Edge: Blain] Here's another Indie hero. The early ones are clever and funny as Retief outwits the grasping Groaci. Retief is made from a Gambit with his coat cut down and hair trimmed. The fruity colors are correct: the CDT wears garish formal clothes for every occasion. The Groaci is adapted from an old Marx dinosaur with extended back legs, a new neck and mandibles and throat sac, eyestalks of plastic string, and eyeballs from a pearl necklace kit. He wears a space harness and ribbed cloak made of florist's wire supporting a split cape cut from index card. The base is a stripped down, modded, and repainted Indiana Jones Kingdom of the Crystal Skull playset on a sheet of acrylic with fake greenery from Michael's. Three LEDs in the tunnel flash to simulate a torch. They're controlled from a Mac talking to an Arduino controller, so we can play the theme song too. Jonny is converted from a Jurassic Park kid. Bandit is a recut Wolf Pup from Schlein, too big for the scale. The jaguar is a straight Schlein from TRU. There's a mummy who needs repositioning behind the door. the artwork simply blew me away-if anyone hasn't read it then I highly recommend it purely for the artwork if nothing else!!!!Geof Darrow is a genius!!
this book came out in 1990 and even today after numerous readings I still get a HUGE kick from it and I have always wanted to make a figure of Nixon.
I can't believe that no toy company has made it yet-the robots, the gore, the immense attention to minute details, the whole look of the book is something right up the street of ,say,McFarlane or Mezco or someone like that-
Nixon is a robot-a cyborg -with human tissue ,skin, blood etc but a robot skeleton and brain, etc so he can take and dish out a huge amount of punishment -and he does in the 3 book series.
My custom figure is based on the amazing artwork of Geof Darrow-which I drew my inspiration from.

Don't know why I customed her, except I like the colors - pine green and butter yellow - and she looks like my mom as a superhero. Made from an Invisible Woman body and real-life snowboarder's head. Her original costume was kind of lame, so I gave her a snappier belt and buckle, better Wasp wings, and goggles like her partner wears. Popeye is converted from the hunter Clayton in Disney's Tarzan, cut down at neck, waist, thighs, and calves to be shorter than Olive, with his chin deeply cleft. Olive is some skinny anime chick with her hair ground off and boot soles built up. The magical Jeep is a rabbit cut to stand up with fox arms and a skinny tail. The flowers are curled paper dipped in white glue on floral wire. The base is gouged from a Fisher Price set, then mounted on acrylic painted like water. A sign behind says "Sweethaven". The boat is named "Olives". Olive stands higher to heighten their size difference, and sticks her nose in the air to remain aloof.
