A lot of times the pathos and nature of any given character was largely determined by your own imagination. It is my opinion that this style of play fostered creativity in the children of that generation, something that is probably largely lost in today's world, since every property has some kind of cartoon or movie or some other kind of franchise to help push the merchandise, in which the characters and their motivations are clearly defined. I am just thankful that there are still children who choose to play with toys at all, what with all the other distractions that modern life has to offer them.
Anyway, I wanted to do a tribute to that style of 70's toy, and so here I offer you the Andorian Adventurer. Zorak is another character that gets the hat trick (Legends/DCUC - Mego - Gi Joe) treatment from yours truly. This makes for some cool shelf displays.
99% of all this stuff comes from CTVT and the head comes from a Sideshow Phantom Of The Opera that was modded with Aves Apoxie and spliced onto a generic mego head (I think it was Wild Bill). The trenchcoat is a CTVT lab coat that was dyed brown. His clothes were worked over with a razor blade and then splattered with paint to give Rorschach a filthy, ratty look. ![[Shang Chi: Master of Kung Fu] I picked up this "Deluxe" Pirates Of The Caribbean Sao Feng in a sale and noticed that with a few minor alterations he would make a pretty good looking base for a Shang Chi custom. GI Joe Quick Kick provided the perfect head to complete this look. Unfortunately, any Shang Chi figure should have a gazillion points of articulation in keeping with the nature of the character, and sadly this figure suffers from rigor mortis big time. That's why I have to scratch my head at the packaging for Sao Feng advertising a "deluxe" figure. This figure might have been deluxe in 1977 with its whopping 8 points of articulation. It still looks good, and I'm an old school guy so the lack of articulation doesn't bother me all that much, but still, it just doesn't seem right.
I was going to use this Shang Chi custom as an excuse to profess my love for Kung Fu and all martial arts, and tell you about an Aikido class I used to take that was full of fat middle aged white people (*raises h](userimages/customs/29500/29279-1.jpg) Shang Chi: Master of Kung Fu | ![[Skyla] Skyla was released in the original AD&D toy-line as a little unarticulated 1 inch figure. This is a pretty simple custom, it is really more of a re-paint with some armor and clothing thrown on. But it does a good job of evoking the spirit of Skyla, I think this Jean Grey/Phoenix figure is the perfect base for this character, and you don't have to really do too much to it to achieve the desired effect.

For some reason it is my curse that I love horribly sculpted, badly articulated figures. And also any kind of female action figure glimmers like a jewel to me...so as you can imagine, this is a lethal combination and there is no defense against the wares of Accoutrements. I must have a thousand of those things, everybody from Marie Antoinette to Anne Bonny! I love 'em - they're grrrreat!

I know, I'm crazy...). Anyway, he brought a copy of the movie over and we watched it while I slapped this toy together (although I did the sculpting beforehand), it was fun. And he is real happy with the figure, so as a toymaker that is a real good feeling knowing that you made something that somebody will cherish for a long time, maybe even the rest of their lives. Because Nixon gets straight chewed up way beyond the scope of "serious amount of damage." I don't want to spoil the story-line for anybody that hasn't read this book yet, but let's just say Nixon is a good candidate for a battle damage contest. Actually, I was working on a Blade Runner Rick Deckard custom with this base Spirit figure when I read about this contest, and then switched gears towards doing a Hard Boiled tribute.
One of the fun things about reading Hard Boiled is looking at all the endless minutiae and detail that Geoff Darrow puts into every panel. I didn't even buy it, and I'm a Rorschach FREAK. So I started trying to make one for myself, and some of my earliest (and clumsiest!) customs were in pursuit of a decent Rorschach.
This figure is almost 100% Movie Masters Joker, who just screams Rorschach from inside the package. What is excellent about this base figure is that it is a little bit smaller than regular DCUC/Legends, so he is actually in scale since Rorschach is kind of a half pint. The only major problem is the head sits a little weirdly on the ball, it is too far forward, so I removed the head and dremelled/modded it so it sits and moves more naturally. I could be wrong here, but the way I remember it Joe was exposed for being a coward when he was forced to fight Lion - O with his bare hands. Due to my affinity for all characters that are Australian (probably due to my Mad Max/Road Warrior obsession as a youth) in origin, I decided to tip the scales back in Joe's favor by making him tiny in stature in comparison to the 'Cats, thereby explaining away any so called cowardice in his behavior. This change in scale is represented here by the difference in size between him and Pumyra, but the same principle applies with your vintage Thundercat figures.
