As you can see, I combined Pepe hugging his tail (Penelope had slipped away?) and a Penelope, cutting away an ugly Pepe as a Foreign Legionnaire. LOTS of cutting. Penelope ended up with Pepe's old tail and a new lower leg. Her whiskers are straight pins. Pepe got a new tail from a hollow plastic and styrofoam. Research showed his tail is freakin' HUGE, like bigger than he is. Then I extended his arms to wrap around her, and gave him a kissy mouth. Bold Jane (so nicknamed by Robin) takes Marian as her model, and fights as one of Robin's "yeomen". The character has proved so popular Jane shows up in many official lists of Merry Men. Jane is fearless and nimble, but so small she must wear her sword on her back lest it drag in the dirt. Sword, belt, and dagger are good quality, obviously "donated" by some nobleman. Dressed as a man, she wears a linen shirt to her knees, a wool tunic, and a capuchin (shoulder cloak). Her goofy hat is a historically accurate archer's hat. Archers were elite troops and liked to show off. It has a tail so long a man can tuck it in his belt or wrap it around his neck like a scarf. Here Jade fires up at a temple wall to keep natives from skewering Race - after securing her share of loot. The base is some animated Asian female from Treasure Planet, maybe? Jade is Eurasian, so I made her smaller and less curvy than Dave Stevens' classic cover. Crusader Rabbit was the first cartoon made for TV (as opposed to theatrical cartoons like Bugs Bunny), in short segments, black and white, then color. Rags the Tiger was added later. CR was a precursor to Rocky & Bullwinkle, with the plucky little brain and the big dumb companion and a villain, Dudley Nightshade (like Snidley Whiplash). Watch shorts on YouTube. Crusader is modded from a PVC Marvin the Martian with Evergreen tubes for ears. I also threaded a brass rod down his arm into his body for the pointing finger. Rags is converted from a screaming Daffy Duck: the eyes and face were an exact match, then I filled in under his duckbill with Bondo and notched in the nose. The body is a sacrified Michigan J. Frog upside down, and the tail is a crazy straw from TRU. Note the characters were designed for easy animating, with few curves and many straight lines, even Rags's stripes. Still, a pain to paint. She worked with Superboy a few times and even earned an honorary membership in the Legion of Super-Heroes, despite that her powers were not inherent. Lana is some Star Trek female with white putty hair. The toughest part was building her bosom, which had to be torn down and refit as a modest teen rack. Try getting those puppies symmetrical and even! The praying mantis is from a old movie monsters set where it terrorized a warehouse. ![[She-Hulk Vs the Wizard] She-Hulk's low-tech fist meets The Wizard's high-tech vehicle.
The Wizard is a simple Toy Biz freeze-the-joints and repaint. The only cutting was to angle his head downward. He has a single rod from his foot through the disk. His outraged expression inspired this scene.
The Flying Disk came with the character, and originally shot disks from a spring loaded magazine. Very clever. Here I added a steering console and some legs from the spares box, then threw in angle iron and snapped wires. Don't worry about the Wiz. He can fly. His whole schtick is anti-gravity disks he gloms on The Thing to levitate him harmless and helpless in the air. She-Hulk hangs from an interior wire.
She-Hulk is much improved over the flat-footed, hair-in-her-face version. I liked her casual clothes over her bathing suit in a recent special. Heavy mod of an action figure from Looney Tunes: Back in Action, an amazingly unfunny movie. The figure did not match the prototype. They ended up with a weird rubbery coating so Tweety could open his mouth wide and half-swallow Daffy. So I froze the joints, filled in big gaps, built a throat and tongue, added florist wire whiskers, then coated the body with layers of Bondo from an auto parts store. ($4 a tube, easy to apply and sand, holds paint well - and thanks to whoever suggested it.) I reposed him, cutting all the joints, even separating the toes, and gave him a neck. I also sawed open his jaw and built a row of teeth. I used a woodburning tool to cut every fissure deeper, then divided the big scales to be more uniform. Only then did I realize his head was too small and his chest too shallow. So I cut new scales (scutes? That's what a turtle's plates are called) by hand from a curved toothbrush case. I covered his head and chest with a new depth of scales, which meant building up his brow and jaw, so had to cut another layer of teeth. I also had to reduce his fist by half. The scales were too smooth, so after some experimentation, used Goop from a hardware store to crown them.
