![[Muppet Whatnot - Jasper Thibodeaux, Muppet Gigolo] I've been away from the realm for too long and thought I'd post something a little different. I recently found the Muppet Whatnots at TRU and as a fan of the Muppets, had to have them. I bought 3 (1 for me and 2 for my 2 younger sons). They are "blank" muppet bodies made for customizing your own character - perfect for Realmers who are into the Muppets. I call mine Jasper Thibodeaux. He's a dapper, smooth talking, crooner from New Orleans.
I'm giving the boys their Whatnots on Christmas along with an expanded kit of custom made parts (eyes, noses, facial and head hair) for endless customizing. I'm putting that up in another post - worth checking out if you found this interesting.](userimages/customs/45500/45399-1.jpg) Muppet Whatnot - Jasper Thibodeaux, Muppet Gigolo Originalby Hammer of the GodsI've been away from the realm for too long and thought I'd post something a little different. The TRU kit comes with a decent assortment of parts but I wanted them to have tons of choices and be able to create any Muppet they could imagine. So I bought a carrying case with storage trays from the hobby store and then set about creating various muppet eyes, noses and hair options the old fashioned way (ping pong balls, felt, foam and hot glue). Took a few hours over the course of 2-3 weeks to create over 20 new sets of eyes, about 15 new noses and 6 new facial and head hair options. All are backed with velcro so they stick to the Muppet just like the stock parts do. Can't wait till they open this on Christmas.](userimages/customs/45500/45398-1.jpg) Muppet Whatnot Workshop Originalby Hammer of the GodsSo I bought my two sons Muppet Whatnots from TRU for Christmas but wanted them to have something closer to the FAO Schwartz experience in NY in terms ...6 comments |
![[Fiendish Dr. Wu] Strictly fo ma ninjas. I’m still planning to make Black Dynamite’s three companions but picked up a Sota Gen for a good price and thought I would get Fiendish Dr. Wu on the shelf – so BD would have a villain to beat up on. The movie and cartoon series establish that BD and Fiendish Dr. Wu have a long-standing rivalry – to the arch degree. The Gen body was perfect and just needed paint. The head came from DC Direct Saint of Killers that needed heavy modification and a repaint.](userimages/customs/42500/42305-1.jpg) Fiendish Dr. Wu | ![[Rischa Vale (Original Exalted RPG Character)] This is my latest commi$$ion job and ended up being a pretty fun project. The buyer wanted to get his girl friend a custom of her RPG character from a game called “Exalted”. The character, Rischa Vale, is described as: “a rebellious pirate who yells a lot, stands on her principles, and gets everybody in trouble. Rough-tough brick type, she takes a licking and keeps on ticking. She's also the group's 'face', and by the end of the game, led a navy of fierce pirate warriors in the service of her god, the Unconquered Sun." I tried to stay as close to the reference illustrations as possible but took some license here and there. Biggest departure was the hair color, as the buyer wanted blue locks vs. lavender.
Recipe was a Madame Hydra/Viper body with a Princess Ariel head (Thundarr). ![[Black Dynamite] 70s Blacksploitation is a guilty pleasure of mine. So when someone does a good parody or homage I make a point to see it. Black Dynamite is the best of both, so I've been following this character around from the original live action film, to the one-shot comic, to the new Adult Swim animated series. This figure is based on BD's animated look - if you haven't seen it do yourself a favor and tune in to Cartoon Network on Sunday at 11:30pm. As time permits and parts present themselves, I'd like to make customs of Bull Horn, Cream Corn, Honey Bee and Fiendish Dr. Wu.
Recipe: Sota SF3 Remy with a Blackest Night J. Stewart head and neck graft. Obviously every thing but the figures legs were sculpted/modified in some way. The bottom of his jacket is flexible rubber cut from the bottom of a LOTR hobbit jacket. The 44 Magnum is fodder with a modified barrel (longer and thicker). The nunchauks are fodder and craft chain.](userimages/customs/41500/41492-1.jpg) Black Dynamite | ![[Black Panther] I was originally asked to do this piece for a buyer but he stopped communication after I’d already ordered the base figures. They sat a few weeks and finally the urge to get a Black Panther among my steadily growing Avengers set took over. The buyer had asked for a classic Black Panther but I decided to do something a little closer to the look Copiel put together in the AvsX books - classic but updated with little tactical embellishments to look less plain.
Head was sculpted. The torso, upper arms and legs are from DCU Black Adam. The lower arms and legs are from DCU Black Manta. Basically no paint rub due to the use of all black body parts. Belt and shoulder straps from modified Riddick and Duke Nukem parts. Cape is a modified cloak from a LOTR hobbit.
Thanks for checking him out.](userimages/customs/41000/40723-1.jpg) Black Panther |
![[Beta Ray Bill] Beta Ray Bill. The first and best of the Thor clones, created by the master, Walt Simonson. I’m generally against alt versions of heroes because it waters down the original but BRB is the exception because his intro and back story are handled so well. If I were the king of comics, I’d create a character who traveled throughout the universe/alt realities/timelines to reap all the “false” hammers and their owners, leaving only Bill and Thor (I’m looking at you Thunderstrike, Dargo, and Thor Girl).
Bill is a ML Piledriver with head, belt emblem and Storm Breaker (his hammer) from the old Legends BRB. The helmet wings are from a HML King Thor, chest discs from MS modern Thor and trimmed cape from a Elder Predator figure. Everything else is sculpted or rendered from craft foam coated with polyurethane.](userimages/customs/39500/39201-1.jpg) Beta Ray Bill | ![[Iron Man] So I bought the new HML Thor - love him to death. Then I made a taller classic Cap as a companion. But you can't have just 2 of the "Big 3" so classic Iron Man was obviously coming, and here he is. All the IM figs I have are too short and the MS IMs are to tall. This custom is a hair shorter than Cap and in just the right scale with Thor, which is all I care about because THOR RULES ALL... but I digress. Knowing, me this set will likely get extended to a few more "popular roster" Avengers.
Torso, upper arms and legs are from two WWE figs. I wanted the arms to be trimmer than Cap's so I needed to combine two figs to get the basic buck. The head, lower arms/hands and lower legs/feet are from the Series 1 ML Iron Man. I sculpted the arc reactor, shoulder hoops, crotch armor and boot soles. The paint job is all metallic but the pics flattened out the red. I also repainted the Stark face to even the skin tones and rework the stache and brows a bit.](userimages/customs/39000/38535-1.jpg) Iron Man |
![[Captain America] I've never been completely happy with any of the Caps we've received from Toy Biz or Hasbro. I recently picked up the amazing modern Thor from the Terrax wave and while I love his size and heft, he made my other new Hasbro Legends look like little kids. So it was Thor who finally made me get to work on a new Cap.
I used a Mattel WWE fig for the base, a ML Series 1 Cap head and the modified belt and shield are from ML Caps from later waves. The gloves, boot tops, abdomen piping, mail armor and chest star were all sculpted. The armor was intimidating and took a few tries to get to a point where I was happy. In hindsight, I think the armor is what made me shy away from this project for years. The finished product and all I learned along the way make it worth while. This Cap has the height of a super soldier, looks nice next to other MLs and perfect next to Thor. Now I just need to get an Ironman with the right height to complete the big 3.](userimages/customs/38000/37842-1.jpg) Captain America | ![["Handyman Grant"] My best friend from Jr. High saw my work on the Realm and asked if I'd make him a custom figure of himself. He wanted a superhero version of his day job as a repairman. I had him send some reference pics and got to work. The recipe is a combo of WWE figures and accessories from various figures that were modified. I lucked into a WWE head that I was able to alter to get a pretty close facial match and the tattoo work helps sell it as "Grant". Had fun with the tools and tiny pencil and Sharpie pen in his overall pocket. the female face on the mug is a picture of his wife. ![[Buzz Lightyear] Ever see a figure in a store and immediately think that it’s sole purpose was to be customized into another character? Well that’s what happened when I saw the new Batman Legacy Mr. Freeze. The package might as well have said “Mr. Buzz”.

![[Conan] On a bit of a barbarian kick these days and I’ve never done a Conan. I wanted to create a recipe that hadn’t been done on the realm to make my definitive Conan. Kind of a Frazetta/Buscema combo, as their art etched Conan into my brain as a kid.
I used a Paul Orndorff body - the WWE wrestling bucks are great bases. The head is a face was molded from a ML Punisher to get that “kill you just as soon as look at you” look and LCBH Conan hair. Cobbled bits from LOTR Eomir and Aragorn to create the skirt/armor and reworked a belt from MOTU 200X Man-At-Arms to create the bracelets. I sculpted over the lace up wrestling boots to make them “swashbucklers”. The sword is a modified LBCH accessory and the shield was taken from a LOTR Boromir.](userimages/customs/35500/35008-1.jpg) Conan | ![[Princess Ariel] Ariel is the third figure in my Thundarr set and the character who received the biggest update, design wise. Ariel is a princess who is well versed in sorcery and ancient earth culture. She traded life in the palace for high adventure with Thundarr and Ookla. I wanted her outfit to be reminiscent of the original but updated a bit - the guys are happy to run around in the same old furs but Ariel is still a princess at heart.
I used an Infinite Crisis Power Girl as a base with bracers and hands from a Toynami Ariel. The hair is a combination of Power Girl and ML Electra with lots of Sculpty to tie it together.
Check out Thundarr and Ookla too.](userimages/customs/35000/34685-1.jpg) Princess Ariel |
![[Ookla the Mok] Next up in my Thundarr set is his faithful companion Ookla the Mok. Ookla and Thundarr were gladiator slaves who broke their bonds and set out to liberate others from oppressive sorcerers and mutant marauders.
I used a Venom for the base figure with a heavily modified ML Sabretooth head. Hair fur briefs and boots were sculpted. In animation, his face is weirdly geometric so to translate it to something “realistic”, I tried to make it look like a death’s head fur pattern.
Check out Thundarr and Ariel too.](userimages/customs/35000/34682-1.jpg) Ookla the Mok | ![[Thundarr the Barbarian] Thundarr the Barbarian is my favorite cartoon series of all time. I made a Marvel Universe scale Thundarr set a while back and recently sold them. I don’t know if it was separation anxiety or the fact that Boskoes recently posted their awesome 6” set - I was compelled to take another crack at these characters.
This time I wanted to keep the essence of the Alex Toth character designs but amp up the realism. For Thundarr I used a WWE Paul Orndorf base figure with a Sota Guile head and LH Conan hair. The fur tunic and boots came from a Toynami Thundarr and the Sun Sword is a hot glue blade with a fodder hilt. I wanted the energy blade to look ferocious and extended the handle so it can accommodate two handed grips.

![[Classic Thor MOTUC] I've been wanting to do a MOTUC rendition of Thor for a long time. As soon as I saw the proto pics of Bow I thought, "THAT is the base figure I've been waiting for". The bone structure, the blue pants and no furry shorts. This just had to be done - even though I'm on the sub and this was the only Bow I bought.
He wasn't the only figure I sacrificed to make my definitive Thor though. I stole parts from 3 separate Thor figures in my collection. Torso armor, hair, helmet wings, boot tops from series 13 ML Thor, Mjolnir (hammer) from Classic Avengers box set Thor, belt emblem from a series 3 ML Thor, cape from MS modern Thor.

Behold, Gemini the evil wizard featured in the pilot episode of Thundarr, "Secret of the Black Pearl". Gemini is one of the most powerful techno-wizards that Thundarr faces and is as close to an arch enemy as Thundarr has so he had to be first. Gemini proved to be pretty formidable and is the only reoccurring wizard in the Thundarr series. Gemini's name comes from his mutation - not only does he have eyes in the back of his head, he actually has a whole second face! He uses his "good" face when he's calm but when he gets ticked his head spins around and his visor flips to reveal his second, "evil" face.
Made with an Iron Man Series Titanium Man as the base. I chopped the front of TM's face off and then using homemade casts of Absorbing Man's head, used that face with modifications to make both the good and evil faces of Gemini. ![[Thundarr the Barbarian] "Demon dogs!" "Lords of light!" "Ahhhhee"
If you don't remember Thundarr, you likely aren't a child of the 80s. Before Blackstar or He-man hit the airwaves, another barbarian warrior ruled Saturday mornings, paving their way. Thundarr borrowed heavily from all the popular fantasy, horror and sci-fi of the arly 80's and blended them into something kids like me couldn't resist. Imagine Conan running around in a Road Warrior, post apocolyptic future weilding a lightsaber - plus throw in an exotic sorceress and faithful Chewbaca-like companion and what's not to love? WB finally made all 21 episodes available on DVD - check it out.
I saw Stocos28 had done something similar with the mu 3 3/4 figures and wanted try my own rendition. Doc Sampson provided the base. I used sculpty to create the fur tunic, arm bracers and transparent sculpty for the "sunsword". Hope to get around to Ookla and Ariel soon.

I recently picked up the Afrodisiac graphic novel, a spoof of 60s and 70s comics and Blaxploitation films, and knew this character must be immortilized in plastic.
The recipe was pretty simple, the base body is from a 5” Jakks wrestling figure and the head is from a 7” Jakks Apollo Creed figure. This combination gave me a ripped out body that wasn’t overly buff (by action figure standards) and the larger head “scaled” the body down even more. I always liked the design of the Redwoods on the box art and Inhumanoids cartoon but the 80's toy was a real let down. I wanted my updated Redlen to look just like the box art I was captivated by as a kid, so using it as a guide, I built this "staction" from scratch, starting with a tin foil armature and sculpting everything else with sculpty. To make sure he still qualified as a custom, I took the green ligh piping eyes from an 80's Granite toy and sculpted Redlen's head around it. Look for more pics in the forum thread.
