![[The Red Skull] Have you ever thought that you came up with an awesome idea for a custom, and then looked online to discover that 800,000 other people had already thought of it and executed it to perfection many times? Yeah, that's how I felt about this figure. There's no doubt that the POC Destro toy practically demands to be made into a Red Skull, so I guess it comes as no surprise. I had actually abandoned this project a while back, after scouting the many amazing versions of this simple recipe out there, concluding that there was nowhere left to go that hadn't already been done. But The Red Skull kept calling to me from beyond the grave, and so finally I relented and made it anyway.
It's mostly just a simple re-paint. And yet simplicity was the key to achieve the desired effect of a sleek, imposing criminal mastermind! Paint the Poc Destro black, slap on some gold buttons and a belt buckle, use a matte sealant for the clothes and a gloss sealant for the boots and gloves, and voila! The second Jack O'Lantern has caused some controversy amongst fans due to Marvel's nonsensical timelines and continuity dilemmas at the time, which the company has tried to retroactively clean up but if I tried to explain the huge mess they made of it in a way that makes sense your head would probably explode like that guy in Scanners, so I will spare you the grief. ![[Doc Savage] I have to credit respected forum member claytonemery for planting the seed that eventually grew into a Doc Savage custom in my brain. If it wasn't for his own inspiring custom work on the series, I probably would have never started researching the character. The funny thing is, I never planned on doing a Doc Savage custom, but as I was rooting around for parts to make my Lone Ranger and Tonto customs, it literally jumped out at me that, "Hey! I bet I could piece together a pretty decent Doc Savage custom outta this!" And so the gauntlet was thrown and it had to be done.
Doc Savage Magazine was printed from 1933 to 1949. In all, 181 issues were published, so this character has an extensive history. He became reanimated when Bantam Books began reprinting the series as novels in 1964, featuring iconic cover art by the amazing artist James Bama. That's pretty cool! I think I have the parts to make one of those!" I have been on kind of a Western kick lately and so I knew it was time.
The Phantom Rider debuted way back in 1949 in some Magazine Enterprises horror themed Western publications under the moniker of Ghost Rider. After the trademark to the character's name and motif lapsed, Marvel basically stole the character in 1967 and featured him in his own title. With the introduction of the Johnny Blaze Ghost Rider character in the 70s, The Western Ghost Rider was rechristened with the unfortunate title of Night Rider (a term used in the South to refer to members of the Klu Klux Klan), and finally to Phantom Rider. In reprints of the Magazine Enterprises appearances, due to licensing issues, he has been renamed once again as The Haunted Horseman. Also, he is an artist and used to draw cartoons of The Lone Ranger for me when I was a little kid, much to my delight. We got to travel all over the place and we had a lot of fun. I think there's still some live Hillbilly Werewolf shows up on youtube if you want to see your boy and friendly neighborhood customizer at work. Although these days you will be more likely to find me with a paintbrush or a sculpting tool in my hand than a guitar, making this custom was a nice little trip down memory lane for me. Plus the character makes for a good looking toy. But I'll admit I am slightly nervous that whoever winds up owning this might stick pins in it, causing me pain. Hopefully none of my ex girlfriends find out that this thing is available.
HBW was created using almost all generic CTVT parts. The guitar came from a Joan Jett Barbie. I love Dr. Loomis...most people, when confronted with a 7 foot tall homicidal maniac, will probably instinctively run in the opposite direction, but not our boy Loomis. He runs straight at the maniac! Ah well, maybe next time...
This custom is mostly generic CTVT stuff, and the overalls were dyed dark blue. I used the ultra versatile Space 1999 Raan head (or as CTVT refers to him for licensing purposes, "Gold Man Head")for Michael's trademark visage. How cool would it be to use a Capt. Kirk head though, considering the famous Halloween mask was sculpted using Willy Shatner as its reference source. Wow, I just thought of that, and now I'm gonna have to try it. It'll be a good excuse to get after that Loomis as well. I managed to get a rooted hair look by cutting the top of Barbie Catwoman's head off and fitting i](userimages/customs/29500/29344-1.jpg) Michael Myers Megoby hussapocalypse....continuing on with my current Michael Myers/Halloween obsession here. I'm really glad that a band like that exists. It is certainly an iconic look. Plus I'm just a natural born sucker for anything that has an eyeball for a head, so when I saw the ingredients for this while scouting CTVT I made the executive decision to go for it.
His head was sculpted with Aves (and was loosely based on the design for Madballs Oculus Orbus), his cane came from the fodder bin, and everything else is CTVT.
