This is my first completed custom in quite some time. I give you my take on AOA Sugarman. He's one of the more funky looking X-Men villains of the 1990s Age of Apocalypse cross-over.
Quite a few figures lost their lives for him to come to life. The base figure is the old Toy Biz 5" version of Sugarman. The core of the figure was used, pretty much everything else was tossed. I removed the action feature and voice-chip. I immobilized the mouth joint and sculpted in neck and throat details. I also swapped out the old horns on the top of the head with some ones I had laying around in my fodder bins. Finally, I cleaned up the hair and blended it together better.
Ball joints were added to all arms. The back two took the most engineering, as I had to convert all cut joints into ball socket joints. I buried the ball sockets of a SOTA Birdie figure into the back of the figure. I had to use Plumbers epoxy to reinforce them from inside. Another one from the way back machine! Back in 2006, I got tired of waiting to find one of the Fantastic Four Movie Doombots. So I did the next best thing, which was to try making one myself. I figured the movie figure was different enough from the comic-style Doombot, that I could take some liberties. So here's the end result.
The whole figure started with the head. A random accessory that came with an old 5" Avengers Tigra figure. It was quite literally a "cat toy". I ripped the arms off the little sucker and figured out it would make a rockin' robot head. Drilled out the eye ball and replaced it with a jewel. Came out looking pretty sweet.
The body of the figure is an obscure Radioactive Clown Unreal Gorge figure. Very cool figure. Comes apart and goes back together real easy. Made the paint job a breeze. Gotta love that. This guy was an exercise in picking the right base figure to avoid paint rub. He was pretty straight forward. Did some raised sculpting for the emblem on his chest. Added some dull needles for his claws.
The big challenge was in his cape. Tried carving/cutting an existing cape and it didn't come out looking right. I switched to cutting long strips of styrene. Glue them together towards the cowl. Then heated them up to get the signature flow to this figure. Finally, sculpted over it in green stuff to support the movement without chipping at the cowl.

I intend to use it pictures and I think it will pass for a lot of different settings. I do need to start by giving credit to DBOCustoms for the idea that sparked my interest in making this puppy. His Weapon X tank sent me running over to Hobby Lobby to find the glass container.
My work started with the tank. I wanted to try to create a "submerged" effect that would permit me to insert different figures. It took some serious digging to find a clear tube that would fit inside glass container. I went from WAAAAAAY too expensive glass and plexiglass options. I landed with a super cheap option. A 99 cent t-shirt mailer. I chopped it down to the right length and placed it inside the container. I then used clear resin to fill the space between t-shirt tube and the container. There are few scenes in comic books that I love more that a kick-butt character heading back to his hideaway to load up on weapons. Then the inevitable scene of them walking to the fight with a boatload of weapons strapped to their back. With that in mind, I give this a go. For whatever reason, along the way I have accumulated some weapon fodder. I am swimming in the stuff. I rigged up a backpack mount out of styrene. I worked pretty awesome. You just have to span off the swords for the Deadpool figure and pop on the mount. Then I started chopping up weapons and gluing them like it was going out of style. I choose the Trigon base for its size and clean sculpt. It was pretty easy to build up from with Apoxie. I went for the Darkseid Arms for their girth. Joining the two were somewhat of a challenge that almost resulting in me jamming a screw driver through my hand. With a little convincing, the two went together rather nicely.
The skeleton is the most controversial portion of the figure. It ended up a little more Mignola-esque than I was planning. Not horrible for a scratch made head. At least for my skills. The customer requested the floating burning stuff in the helmet, so that helps to cover up some of the sculpting.
The upper body armor was a treat. Trying to build the raisers and have the clear dome fit over it correctly took some seriously trial and error. ![[Absorbing Man] So I don't know if I have ever really loved either version of Absorbing Man that we have seen made. The Toy Biz one is the better of the two, but he is a tricky one to come by. The Hasbro one is dang close to Marvel Universe scale. Through excessive fodder purchases I ended up with one to many T Hawks. The base seemed easy enough. Though not the most challenging of customs, the brick work on his arm provided a decent feat. Probably some of my better sculpting working to date (but I am a smidge biased). Just ignore the less than impressive work on the boots. The head is from some random figure I dissected a long time ago.
I opted to mirror the Toy Biz version and paint him in his prison garb. I chickened out on painting the grey and white prison pants.
