DC Super Heroes (Mattel) - Series 2
In 1993, in the back of Superman comics, a breif one page strip was shown, giving the viewer glimpses of a green gloved fist pounding against a steel wall followed by the words Doomsday Is Coming.
Each comics showed the glove tearing slowly with each blow, revealing gray flesh and spiked knuckles. Finally, the wall broke...DOOMSDAY IS HERE!
What followed was an epic battle that raged through Justice League and all Superman comics published at the time between Superman and the mysterious monster that was dubbed Doomsday by Booster Gold.
Finally, in Superman issue number 75, the battle came to a conclusion. As the two Gods, one evil and one good, delivered simultanious blows to eachother, Doomsday was killed, but at a terrible cost. Superman died.
But he would return and so would Doomsday...again...and again...and again...
Now Mattel brings forth the titan from Krypton's anceint past! Doomsday towers over the many, many Superman toys in the DCSH line, with carefully sculpted muscles and bone spikes covering his back, arms, face, chest and knees.
Unfortunately, they are made of very soft and flexable plastic, unlike the first Doomsday toy released in the 90's which was made of hard plastic. Stupid child safty laws! If a kid pokes his eye out on one of the spikes, I'm sorry but that is mother nature taking out the trash! My, wouldn't I make a wonderful father?
This guys is loaded down with articulation, allowing for some pretty cool posses.
What makes this for me is its pure nestalgic value. For anyone that grew up in the 90's, the Death of Superman storyline affected you in some way or form, whether long time reader, or newbie drawn into comics by the storyline. For all the critisim of the 90's, never have we gotten such cool villains like Doomsday, Bane, Cyborg Superman, and Parralax.
Over all, this guys gets four and a half stars out of five!
