So I thought I'd try my hand at customization but didn't want to dive in head first and possibly ruin a few good figures. I found some pretty miserable Ninja Turtles at a discount shop and thought that they would be perfect to start out on. Original figure on the left, my repaint on the right. Sorry for the low quality photos didn't have a good camera on hand. Any pointers and advice appreciated.
depending upon how you want it to look, you might consider a very light wash of a darker color it. generally people use black if its a 'bluer' color, or dark broken if a redder color. The thing is to mix some future floor finish into your mix to break down the surface tension of the water so it really flows into the cracks. This can leave your figure with a glossy finish, so some people then give them a coat of matt clear to seal it off and help preserve it.
Its a really common technique in wargame figure painting, but I don't see many people using it for action figs. One like this with lots of crannies I would think would work very well for it.
The repaint looks real good, no over spill on the fine detail parts or the parts where two colours meet. One question though, what kind of paints are you using? might just be the pictures but they look kinda chalky.

Nice paint job. Looks much better than the original.
