question for customizers

Posted in Custom Workstation

Does it ever make you mad or frustrated when a company makes a figure of a custom you made? I've had this happen to me a couple of times and every time it happens I get depressed because of all the time I put into the customs . Luckily I was able to sell the customs before the official figures came out and pay for some of my work.

The custom figure I'm working on right now, I know that a company is making one because I saw it at their convention, but it might not be released for a year or more and will probably cost more than I want to pay, plus super expensive shipping from france. So I'm going to just make my own

Sometimes for me its more like I'm racing to "beat the clock" like I know the toy company will eventually make the wrestlers I make but not for like almost 8 months, So it's comfortable to know I have that time from when a new superstar premiers till when his figure gets made. Then on the other hand I make older wrestlers that they don't have a license for or new indy wrestlers that will prob only get the one figure I made, so it's truely one of a kind, one day I may make a few deadpools or punisher but for now I'm ok.

I do think that's cool to a degree. When I see other people doing soothing and it's something I thought I Thought of first I get a good feeling like.
" if their doing awesome work. It's a good sing cause I'm on the right path. :]"

I have a gort warrior predator on the works right now. its basically a mod from a mask less open mouth classic pred, and then there's the news that neca's producing the same version. yeah.. it sucks coz neca makes good looking preds. hehe!
well, maybe I'll just add some cool accessories so it'll still look better than the factory released one. and yeah.. I hope they f@ck up with the color/paint apps too.. haha! just kidding... I love neca.

The one thing that gets me is when they make a good or unique head sculpt. On the other hand I will see some terrible head sculpts that have been factory produced and feel much better about my custom. For the most part though I like to see that the big companies make figures of characters that don't usually get made.

I just figure that I am going to make it better than they do anyways. I always used to get nervous when I would hear of a new Batman figure coming out and if it would be better than the one I made, but the toy companies love to disappoint. At best, I like a part or something from the new figure and swap it out on a favorite figure of mine. Also helps to customize in Marvel Legends 6 inch because, well, you have a year or so to beat them if they announce a figure

Well, I kind of feel better because I get this sensation my figure somehow got to "production" level and with the extra points that mine is still probably better and with more detail and care.
Some years ago I made a JLU Captain Marvel (Shazam in some countries) and eventually Mattel released it, they looked practically the same, but mine had his chest symbol beveled, cape was removable, nice gold painting and even made him with a small grin.

I know that. Was a kid and , it sounds so stupid but this was like...1992. Nothing but g.I.Joe had hinges. I drew this big chart detailing peg holes ( I was like 9...) how easy it would be tomake figs with hint fingers. Interchangable hands and ball joints. Even sheaths for weapons. ( all what I later learned they were doing in japan at the time) My dad was a busniessowner and helped me type it up and mail it to hasbro and Kenner. They sent me a nice letter saying you know
"we look forward to you ideas and future business thanks for the busniess. Ect"
So years later...I was kinda let down seeing marvel legends after knowing the story of
Stickfas and mister Benny j. Also I recently saw a concept fig I was working on on another site.
I'm still gonna make it but ,they did a bang up job...hard to live up to theirs.

I've had that happen a bunch of times and it always sucks. You can usually find out whats gonna be in an upcoming line months before it's released. Ya just have to stay informed.
