Automotive Paints

Posted in Custom Workstation

Has anyone here used them?
Any advice for plastic treatment before the paint? Resources?
Best primer color for pearl paints?
Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Well, just for the record. I purchased what they called "Acrylic automotive" paints (strong stuff by the way, lots of fumes) and used regular and vulgar thinner you get at the hardware store.
Painted with airbrush and did a small layer with mostly air (low pressure), after that, let it dry for 24 hours and began painting the rest of the layers.
Everything went really fine, I am begining to love this stuff, it is a very hard to rub paint and it wasn´t expensive either (Like $8 for 1/16 galon).
I painted like 3-4 layers with just 50 droplets of paint, so if you have the resources to do it, I definitely recommend it.
As soon as I have my optimus ready, I will post the results.

don't know, never tried because automotive paint costs a lot and is hard to get and you have to use a spraygun/compressor.

Activator (hardner):

•ethyl acetate *
•toluene *
•aliphatic polyisocyanate
•hexamethylene diisocyanate

Clearcoats:

•methyl ethyl ketone
•toluene *
•mixed dibasic esters *
•petroleum naptha *

Thinners:

•butyl acetate *
•ethylbenzene *
•toluene/xylene *
•methyl ethyl ketone *

Basecoats:

•methyl ethyl ketone *
•titanium dioxide
•metallic pigments
•xylene *

Primers:

•barium sulfate
•resins and fillers
•toluene/xylene *
•isocyanates often added

Very useful and makes sense! Thanks.
I know automotive paint is kind of "hot" for plastic; do you know if I primer the plastic first, will it melt?

most primers are either grey or red

the red primer is used for redish colored paints, the grey primer is used for most any other color.

if the pearl paint is kind of transparent, I would do a basecoat of the same color as the pearl paint

example:
red primer -> opaque red pearl paint
red primer -> red paint (flat probably because I think it dries better) -> transparent/translucent red pearl paint
grey primer -> opaque green pearl paint
grey primer -> green base coat -> transparent/translucent green pearl paint

topcoat with clear
