Head casting (with NO peg hole)

Posted in Custom Workstation

So the figures I want to use are MOTUC. They have the neck peg attached to the shoulders/neck and it's the head that has the hole.

How do I make a casting of a head with no neck peg attached, so I can paint and pop straight onto the figure?

I saw someone on youtube who put a piece of plasticine into the hole in the head and embedded that into a piece of clay at the bottom of the paper cup and then made a mold.

Wouldn't that create a peg on the head once it's been cast? Or would it turn out with a hole ready to pop onto the figure?

If I'm reading your post correctly, you're talking about taking a head and putting it in a cup to make a mold... one thing you can do if you want to keep that peg hole, is once you remove the mold from the cup, you can remove the clay that acts like the 'stand' and cover the inside with some petroleum jelly and then put more rubber into the plug hole. To make the casts, you fill the mold with plastic and then push the plug into the opening. Some of the plastic will probably spill out, but when the plastic cures you can pull the top piece of the mold off, and remove the head with the hole cast in already.

yes. Drill and route out the inside for the pop.

Ah I see, so I'd have to drill the hole myself.

Thanks :-)

I'm a bit confused. Almost all figures' heads pop onto a peg. The head gets drilled appropriately for the peg size it's going onto. I wouldn't count on resin being strong enough at that thickness to survive being popped on and off repeatedly. (possibly if you are using a vaccuum chamber, but I don't have one so I can't postulate)
