The Kenner Aliens toy line has always been one of my favorites. Recently I was hit with inspiration to recreate several of the old Kenner figures, but in a modern, more realistic, NECA style. The Bull Alien was always one of my top favorites from that line, so I knew I had to start with him. It’s mostly a NECA Xenomorph, but heavily modified. I had to completely rework the back legs, cutting a lot off, dremeling, and reshaping in order to get them in the same pose and look as the hind legs of the original Bull Alien figure. The front and back feet, horns, and a couple of other pieces actually come from the original Bull Alien figure, I just made them fit and blend in with the NECA figure. The scorpion barb on the end of his tail comes from a Spider-Man Classics Mac Gargan Venom figure.

I sculpted the forehead using Aves Apoxie Sculpt to make it bigger and look more like the original Bull Alien. I also recreated the original Bull Alien figure’s “skull ramming” action feature by making an extra neck piece you can attach the figure to give it the same extended look. Then I completely repainted the figure, using the original Kenner Bull Alien as my guide. Then I dry brushed some gloss clear coat over the entire thing to give it that gross, wet look the xenomorphs always have. And now the Bull Alien is ready to ram down some Colonial Marines! I plan to do an entire line of Kenner Aliens updates, both the Colonial Marines and the Xenomorphs, so be sure to check back here at Mint Condition Customs for more updates!

Hopefully NECA will tackle these too one day. I know Randy said they might do some at some point, meaning they're not really on their radar at the moment, but perhaps one day. I know I'd buy them in an instant!

Those are some of my favorites too. I'm very intrigued at redoing the Mantis Alien, but man it will be tough!

Oh and to comment on your figure John, AMAZING. The colors, the horns (I like how they're tilted in now!) and the feet match up perfectly. Whatever colors you used make him look exactly like the old figure, bravo!

Thanks John. I was lucky I had just the perfect pigment from Citadel that really matched the original Bull Alien's colors.

No. He's been doing figures from the AVP arcade game. I've had this in the works for a while now. He and I actually have talked at great length about this to make sure that neither of us would be stepping on each others' toes.

When it comes to customs nobody gets exclusive dibs because we're all copying existing work. One reason John Harmon and I post our recipes for our customs is so other people can make the same thing, heck even better than we did the first time around! He and I discussed at length about making Aliens customs and while I'm a fan of the video games he's tackling the vintage toy style at the same time. But as good friends we cross-promote each other's work and get ideas from each other which is why you'll see a Scorpion Alien design from me and a video game design from him at some point.

If anyone has reservations about making their own Aliens customs don't let someone else already having done one stop you! The only way you can get better is with practice and it takes an outside party's insight to look at a custom and go, "Hey, I think this part would work better." and trying something else out. So get out there and make some Alien Vs Predator video game and Kenner customs yourselves if you feel so inclined, NECA has a great Alien Xenomorph base to work with.
