Ottman began his wrestling career in the late 1980s and achieved significant success as a tag team wrestler. He debuted in the WWF in 1989 as Tugboat, a friendly and jovial character who acted as a loyal friend to Hulk Hogan. Tugboat later turned villainous and aligned himself with Earthquake, forming a tag team known as The Natural Disasters.

Now going by the ring name Typhoon, the Natural Disasters became one of the prominent tag teams of that era and won the WWF Tag Team Championship once. They had notable feuds with teams like The Legion of Doom (Hawk and Animal) and Money Inc. (Ted DiBiase and Irwin R. Schyster). In 1992 they won the tag team championship from MOney Inc. before losing it back to Money Inc. at the Wrestling Challenge

After leaving the WWF in 1993, Ottman wrestled for various promotions under different names, including The Shockmaster in World Championship Wrestling (WCW). His Shockmaster debut in WCW is infamous due to a mishap during his grand entrance where he was meant to smash through a wall but tripped causing him to fall forward through the wall with his helmet falling off and sliding across the floor.
