Red Robin DC Comics Multiverse (Mattel) - Killer Croc Series Rated 4.00 stars by Milbury Red Robin is one of those Goldilocks characters who to this day has never been done true justice but this is probably the best version of the character for fans of his Tim Drake incarnation (KC fans should get the DCUC version, obviously). At an even 6 and a half inches he's just a smidgen too tall for Tim but is much more satisfactory for 6 inch scale collections than the inexplicably tall New 52 version. His costume is inspired by the tepid DC Rebirth, but is close enough to the classic outfit to pass muster for more oldschool fans. Articulation is excellent, as is the case for most of the other figures from this line. His accessories include the requisite bo staff (which thankfully isn't bendy as accessories of this type are prone to being) and the usual pair of alternate hands. With...[See More]
Tails Sonic Adventure (ReSaurus) - Series 1 Rated 3.90 stars by RMaster007 As a toy collector, you often find yourself asking, "Do I really want to pay that much for this?" Sometimes you're willing to pay the price, other times you'll want to hold out for a better deal. And it's not just new figures I'm talking about; it's older lines and releases that nowadays tend to go for twice as much as they cost originally.
Case in point, look at ReSaurus' Sonic Adventure line. The figures look nice, but the high value they have has made me hold off on them. Recently, I found a Tails new in box going for a good deal (albeit still a bit over $100 total) on eBay, and decided "Hey, why not? It's not like I'll find any of these for that low again."
The packaging is a small cardback with simple graphics, but it looks fairly nice. The front has a sticker of the character in...[See More]
Mighty Hog and Rhino-Man Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon (Neca) - Multi-Packs Rated 4.60 stars by RMaster007 Last year's Haul-a-thon gave us a Bebop and Rocksteady two-pack, more specifically their robotic counterparts. Because of that, it makes sense that the real deals would show up during the event this year, albeit with a twist.
The original Bebop and Rocksteady figures were sculpted by Trevor Zammit, but here, the heads of them weren't reused. Instead, they got Paul Harding to sculpt some all-new heads. On the plus side, these heads are more accurate to the show than the regular versions were, with Bebop having sculpted fur on his cheeks, and Rocksteady as a whole looking far better, with smaller ears and nostrils. The jaws are still hinged, but with these guys, they look off. Okay, Bebop is fine, but Rocksteady's is weird. Open up his mouth and you'll see what I mean.
Now is when I...[See More]
Dot Animaniacs (Super7) - Ultimates Rated 4.50 stars by RMaster007 After reviewing the lab mouse duo in Super7's Animaniacs line, it was only natural that I move on to the main three: the Warner brothers and their sister. Crazy thing is, the sister was the only one left at Third Eye. They've been having a lot of sales recently, and that combined with the popularity of the license meant they went fast.
While Pinky and the Brain both shared motifs for their packaging, the Warner siblings all get unique designs. In Dot's case, her box has cotton candy stripes. It's pretty simplistic, but I think it fits with the license. There also isn't a lot of tape and plastic strips to worry about either. My one complaint is that the box is too darn big, and I feel it could've been made smaller, given how this isn't a large figure.
Dot's default head is an open-mouth...[See More]
Storm Shadow G.I. Joe - Classified (Hasbro) - Basic Series Rated 4.70 stars by RMaster007 I'll admit that while I like G.I. Joe, I haven't been buying too much of Hasbro's Classified Series. I've been picking and choosing with it, and there are a couple I'm excited for, such as Shipwreck and Snowjob, but overall, my main attention is towards the recently-released Super7 figures. The most recent addition to my Classified collection, obtained around two months ago, is the COBRA ninja: Storm Shadow.
There's not much that can be said about Storm Shadow's portrait, since most of his head is covered by a mask. The eyes are clearly shown, and the work on the pupils and eyebrows is top notch. They also gave him a tiny scar around his left eye, and it's the kind of detail you'll only notice if you look closely. While the paint is mostly clean, there is a bit of white bleed on the...[See More]
Dreadmon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Neca) - Adventures Rated 4.75 stars by RMaster007 While inspired by the TMNT cartoon going on at the time, Archie's Adventures comic didn't take long to stray away from merely adapting cartoon episodes and start making new stories, which also led to new characters. Sure, Man Ray was already in the toy line as Ray Fillet, but names such as Dreadmon were created specifically for the Archie universe.
Another team-up between Tony Cipriano and Kushwara Studios, Dreadmon's sculpt is based off the issues penciled by Ken Mitchroney. He has some pretty wild hair going on, with a few small skulls for accessories, and he has an earring on his left ear, but mine has some excess plastic on it, though I got if off using some small scissors. The expression looks great, with cartoony eyes and a hinged jaw.
Standing around the 6 1/2" mark, Dreadman is...[See More]
Man Ray Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Neca) - Adventures Rated 4.75 stars by RMaster007 In case you haven't heard or your Targets haven't gotten any new NECA stock in a while, Haul-a-thon has recently returned. The event went down pretty well last year, though this time around, I haven't seen too much stock as of late. I've still gotten pretty lucky, having recently scored some new TMNT figures, including the next figure in the Adventures line: Man Ray.
Man Ray's sculptors (and fabricators) are credited as Tony Cipriano and Kushwara Studios, but they don't specify who did what. What is clear, however, is that they were aiming to replicate Ken Mitchroney's art style. The default portrait, sporting an angry shouting expression, looks great, though I will say the pupils are too big. If they were a little smaller, and shifted towards each other a little bit more, the head would...[See More]
No Limits Trashin' Pumpkin Madballs (Premium DNA) - Basic Series Rated 4.75 stars by RMaster007 Early last year, we saw the release of Premium DNA's Madballs line, the first line by a new company. I got one during the initial pre-order out of curiosity, and I was so impressed by it, I went ahead and got the rest of the figures. Some time ago, another figure was released in the line, and it's a rather unique one; this "Trashin' Pumpkin" character was created for a promotion crossing over the franchise with the mobile game Need for Speed: No Limits.
The packaging is a lot like the previous Madballs figures, making use of a slip cover over a window box that uses no plastic strips or twist-ties, just trays. The graphics are different, however. There's a mixture of black and purple all around, and the slip cover gets some really nice graphics. The main box doesn't have the cross-sell...[See More]
Optimus Prime Transformers - R.E.D. (Hasbro) - Basic Series Rated 4.45 stars by RMaster007 Even though the whole gimmick with Transformers is that they, well, transform, there's been plenty of figures that don't. Super7's Ultimates line comes to mind, but there's another ongoing line of non-transforming Transformers, and it's straight from the co-creators of the franchise: Hasbro's Robot Enhanced Design, or R.E.D., series. It's been around a little longer than what Super7's been doing, and it covers not just G1, but Beast Wars and Prime. While I've gotten a handful of these so far, it's best to start my reviews with THE transformer - Optimus Prime.
The figure comes in a trapezoidal window box that's fittingly red, with a great illustration on the front. There's actually two plastic trays - one in the front for the figure, and another on the side for the accessories. There's...[See More]
Brain Animaniacs (Super7) - Ultimates Rated 4.70 stars by RMaster007 As I've stated, you can't keep Pinky and the Brain apart, so I had to get the genius part of the pair next.
Befitting his name, the Brain has a really big head. Super7 managed to convert his appearance to three dimensions very well, with all the proper details. It's solid plastic as well, making it one heavy cranium. The head is the standard grumpy Brain look, but it can be swapped out for a more expressive head, with the right eye and mouth wide open. Looking at it, you can just hear Brain's trademark "Yes!". Both heads have consistent paint work, but suffer from uneven edges.
In contrast to Pinky's tall and slender build, the Brain is short and chubby. Standing around 4 1/2" inches, the proportions of the body fit with the head, and his tail, unlike Pinky's, isn't designed to lay on...[See More]
