Trapped by Arachnoid Mighty Max (Blue Bird) - Doom Zones Rated 4.50 stars by Greedo1138 While I certainly enjoyed and played with this set as a child; "Mighty Max Trapped by Arachnoid" was never among my favorites. That's kind of unusual, at least for me, as I love spiders. Perhaps it was because this particular Doom Zone is rather plain; compared to most of the others? Let's proceed with the review!
A fun Doom Zone on the exterior, it forms, naturally, a giant spider. The colors of black, purple and green look good together and conjure feelings of Halloween. One of the mini-figures, a giant spider named Creep, lends its mandibles and legs to the exterior; giving it a rather grotesque appearance; as if the spider is dragging along its bloated, bulbous body on legs too small. It also appears to be covered in small egg sacks (one of which is a component of the interior),...[See More]
Conquers the Palace of Poison Mighty Max (Blue Bird) - Doom Zones Rated 5.00 stars by Greedo1138 Looking back on my childhood; a few Mighty Max toys jump out at me with a great deal of not only nostalgia, but also sentimentality. "Mighty Max Conquers the Palace of Poison" is one such toy.
I recall coming home from school one day; and my mom was outside our house, decorating for either fall/autumn or perhaps Halloween. I can't recall precisely, but it was one or the other. She told me she bought me a surprise in town; and I could have it once I finished my homework; if I had any. Usually I didn't, but that day I did. How I rushed inside to get it done! Didn't even go to my room, just straight to the kitchen table and finished up that homework in record time! Work done and surprise in hand, I fell in love with Palace of Poison before I ever even tore it free of the package.
It simply...[See More]
Sinks Nautilus Mighty Max (Blue Bird) - Doom Zones Rated 5.00 stars by Greedo1138 As a kid, I had lots of Mighty Max toys. I had all of the big playsets excluding the Skull Master Mega Head; such as Skull Mountain, Dragon Island, Magus and Terror Talons. I had twelve of the eighteen Doom Zones. I had nine of the smaller Horror Heads and three of the more action figure-like Battle Warriors. Far from a complete collection; but a nice one nonetheless.
But one item I never owned as a kid (nor ever even seen in person until I bought one a couple of weeks or so ago) was the Doom Zone named "Mighty Max Sinks Nautilus". So as an adult; it was one of the first I simply had to get; especially after watching online a couple videos reviewing it.
First off, the exterior. This playset is, of course, a nautilus. Its purple shell with orange dots on the top and red/black cephalopod...[See More]
Grips the Hand Mighty Max (Blue Bird) - Doom Zones Rated 5.00 stars by Greedo1138 Monsters, ghouls, freaks and aliens have always been a big part of my life; and always will be. That's one of the reasons Mighty Max struck all the right chords with me.
Born in 1985; by the time I was old enough to go into a store and exclaim "I want that!" so many of the classics were gone from the shelves. Kenner's Star Wars, Masters of the Universe, ThunderCats and so on had all faded from sight. Luckily, cool properties like The Real Ghostbusters, Skeleton Warriors, Kenner's Aliens and Predator stuff, Tales from the Crypt Keeper and things like Jurassic Park and Street Sharks filled my childhood. And, of course, there was Mighty Max.
I was seven years old when Mighty Max hit the store shelves in the U.S., and it was in immediate hit with me right away. Thanks to toys like Monster in...[See More]
Treehouse Simpsons (Playmates) - Interactive Playsets Rated 4.00 stars by RMaster007 In the early 2000s, Playmates Toys put out what just might be their best toy line yet: The Simpsons. The Simpsons has gotten a lot of merchandise, but none of them can beat the World of Springfield line. The main gimmick of these figures that they speak if connected to playsets, but they were also known for great sculpts and accessories. I have a big collection of the World of Springfield figures (not a complete collection however), and aside from Palisades' Muppets figures, it's my all-time favorite line. For my first review, I'm doing Bart's Treehouse.
The packaging on the set looks great. It has pretty decent graphics, and there's a hole on the side of the box so you can try out the talking feature. There's a few twist-ties to remove, and some screws keeping the set inside the box...[See More]
Tom (Zoot Suit) Hanna Barbera (Jazwares) - Tom and Jerry Rated 3.65 stars by RMaster007 Jazwares is a company whose work ranges from good to bad, or just in-between. Their Fortnite and RWBY figures are excellent, but most of their other licenses are inconsistent in quality and perfection. One of their licenses, the Hanna-Barbera line, is mostly good aside from some imperfections. One of the more perfect figures is Tom from Tom and Jerry fame in his zoot suit. I've never seen him show up at retailers, but he does show up online every now and then, especially on Amazon. I found mine at a toy show three years ago.
The packaging on him is a decent cardback. It has some good graphics, especially the back, which has art showing a whole amount of the classic cartoons most people grew up with.
The sculpting on Zoot Tom looks great, despite his head being smaller in scale than the...[See More]
Invader Zim (Old Man Diguise) Invader Zim (Palisades) - Exclusives Rated 3.75 stars by RMaster007 When I did my review on this, I had a somewhat negative opinion on it, but since then, this set's grown on me, so it's time I gave it another go. And I'm talking about the Wizard World Chicago exclusive Old Man Zim and Gir set my Palisades Toys.
The packaging is a simple box, using the splatter graphics used on Nickelodeon merch in the mid-2000s. We also have some graphics of Zim on the box as well. The inside of the box even shows off a Zim-like background. Sure, the box isn't much, but it works for this exclusive.
Let's start off with Zim. He's wearing his old man disguise which was seen in at least two episodes. He has a screaming expression, although I would've preferred a different head sculpt, and a left hand sculpted to hold accessories. The paint job is mostly perfect, aside...[See More]
Military Diver & Spinosaurus Jurassic Park III (Hasbro) - Humans Rated 2.00 stars by Wasacoolday This is a fairly decent figure. The diver sure looks like a diver, though not necessarily military, were it not for the flag on his arm. The figure stands in a rather neutral pose, except for his left leg, which is positioned in a forward move. The paint job is pretty good, with a fair amount of details. I’m not an expert on diving equipment, so I don’t know whether his gear is realistic, but it looks good enough to me.
The same can’t be said for the weapon. Once again Hasbro uses its own launching mechanism, with the push-the-end-of-the-missile system. It’s a rather lousy system anyway, but in this case it just doesn’t work right. The missile hardly flies in a straight line to its target but gets off course easily. It also does little damage if it hits anything at all, it just lacks the...[See More]
Eric Kirby & Alpha Pteranodon Jurassic Park III (Hasbro) - Humans Rated 2.00 stars by Wasacoolday The figure looks good, and is in fine scale compared to the other adult figures. The little details add some realism, but stand in the way of playability: the flashlight is attached to the hand and the backpack is not removable, unfortunately. The figure stands in an odd pose, with one hand stretched out and one leg in a forward move. Overall it looks like he’s looking down at something. He’s not able to move his legs, but he can move his torso, which is a poor substitute though.
The Pteranodon is at least twice as big as the Eric figure, which is unusual for human figures and their dinosaurs. It certainly isn’t a hatchling as it most common. The paint job is fairly decent, but nothing spectacular and different from the Pteranodons in the movie. This figure doesn’t have much moveable...[See More]
Dr. Alan Grant & Compies Jurassic Park III (Hasbro) - Humans Rated 3.50 stars by Wasacoolday This is a fun little set, though not because of the Grant figure. Though the figure doesn’t stand in an outrageously inconvenient position, like a lot of the Wave 1 figures, it’s still not great. The figure again doesn’t resemble Alan Grant much, and the paint job is rather bland. It’s not bad or anything, but not much of an improvement either.
The gun unfortunately sports the same weak firing mechanism as most of the guns in the Wave 1 line. It is however largely redeemed by it’s original and cool look. It looks relatively realistic, and the fact that the missile isn’t really a missile but more of a fireball does give it some credit. It still doesn’t have a great impact when fired, but the most likely target, the Compies, are easily knocked over by it. The paint job, with the darker...[See More]
