G.I. Joe (Super7) Reviews
Scarlett
G.I. Joe (Super7) - Ultimates
Rated 3.95 stars by RMaster007
For an incredibly divisive team of military operatives, G.I. Joe has surprisingly very few women. Case in point, the original cartoon had only three female members on the good guys' side: Lady Jaye, Scarlett, and Cover Girl. At least with the women, Super7's been able to get almost all of them out as quick as possible in Ultimates form. We already got Jaye and Baroness (three versions at that), and Cover Girl should be out within the next month, should that leaves Scarlett to look at. Last wave's Jaye and Baroness had great female likenesses, but they were held back by a lack of painted skin, instead using cheap-looking glossy colored plastic. Scarlett doesn't have this issue, as Super7 made sure this wave had painted skin tones, and it helps make the eyes and lips blend in with it...[See More]
Destro
G.I. Joe (Super7) - Ultimates
Rated 4.40 stars by RMaster007
Good thing I decided to hold off a bit on the second wave of G.I. Joe Ultimates, since I was able to get all of them for just under a hundred total, the last of which being Destro, another major C.O.B.R.A. member. Unlike the other figures in this wave, Destro doesn't suffer from glossy, unpainted skin, since he has no visible skin. His head is covered by a metal helmet, featuring a metallic finish, and it looks really good. Since it's a cartoon, Destro's helmet expresses with him, hence why there's thick eyebrows on it. He comes with four heads, a bit more than usual for Ultimates: one neutral, one shouting, one laughing, and one covered in lava, coming from one of the early five-part episodes. All of them are great, and the clean paint certainly helps. At about 7 1/4" tall, Destro...[See More]
Storm Shadow
G.I. Joe (Super7) - Ultimates
Rated 4.50 stars by RMaster007
Everybody knows ninjas are cool, hence why G.I. Joe has two; Snake Eyes on the side of good, and Storm Shadow on the side of evil. Snake Eyes is the more popular one, probably since he doesn't talk and has a wolf buddy, but Storm is pretty cool too. It feels like the packaging for Super7's Joe Ultimates changes every wave. The second wave started taping flaps closed and using plastic ties, and now the third wave has apparently done away with making details on the packaging "stand out," for lack of a better term. The emblem, logo, dog tags, etc. are now just flat; nothing raised. It still looks pretty good, and getting most of the contents out should be easy. Like his adversary Snake Eyes, most of Storm Shadow's head is covered, but his eyes are at least exposed. It's a simple design...[See More]
Baroness (Blue Suit)
G.I. Joe (Super7) - Ultimates
Rated 3.85 stars by RMaster007
Like the Joes, C.O.B.R.A. has no problem including women in their ranks, such as Baroness, one of the most ruthless members of the organization. I mentioned recently with Flint that Super7 always seems to nail the portraits on the Joe like, looking more close to life than their real-life human figures. As with the good guys in wave two, Baroness has unpainted, glossy skin on her head, but she looks a little nicer than the others, with a bit less shine. In addition to the neutral and smirking expressions, Baroness also comes with a head that I understand is based off her comic look, with shorter hair with blue wash, round glasses with clear lenses, and pink lipstick instead of red. Unlike most Ultimates, she gets a fourth head, another comic-inspired one wearing an oxygen mask and a tank...[See More]
Lady Jaye
G.I. Joe (Super7) - Ultimates
Rated 3.80 stars by RMaster007
Who says fighting for justice is a men's-only thing? Standing about 6 7/8" tall, Lady Jaye's outfit reminds me a bit Flint's, sharing some of the same elements. She has rolled-up sleeves, gloves, two belts around the waist (but no shoulder straps), and boots, all done up in army-esque shqdes of green and brown. The one strap on her torso is sculpted as part of the body, rather than a separate piece, resulting in the look being broken up too much when the chest is posed. The little knife in the holster on her chest is removable, as is the quiver with all sorts of tools. The paint is clean, but as with Flint, the head and forearms aren't painted (or at least not matte), resulting in them contrasting with the painted skin tone on the body. As for her likeness, the glossy skin throws off...[See More]
Flint
G.I. Joe (Super7) - Ultimates
Rated 4.25 stars by RMaster007
Yo Joe! It took me a while to complete the first wave of Super7's G.I. Joe Ultimates, and I recently got my hands on most of wave two. It's a good thing I held out a bit, since I was able to grab them for less than $22 each. May as well discuss these, starting with Flint. As seen in wave one, Super7 did a pretty good job nailing the character designs from the Sunbow cartoon, and Flint is no exception. He bears a stoic, serious look, and it's accurate to the animation. Alongside it are a slightly smiling head with the beret as a separate piece, and a head talking into a headset. Unlike Duke from wave one, Flint's skin tone on the head isn't painted (it was supposed to, but something changed at the factory I guess), resulting in a glossy appearance. On the positive side, the paint on this...[See More]
Snake Eyes
G.I. Joe (Super7) - Ultimates
Rated 4.50 stars by RMaster007
If you're familiar with G.I. Joe, then you'd know that there are a lot of characters in it. In the Sunbow cartoon, each of the tens, if not hundreds, of Joe members got at least one episode with them as a major player, but arguably one of the most well-known characters in the franchise as a whole is Snake Eyes, his popularity most likely attributed to the fact that he's a speechless ninja. In the "M.A.S.S. Device) five-part mini series that would ultimately serve as the pilot for the cartoon, Snake Eyes had a completely different look. As opposed to his usual get-up, he wore a bodysuit that had a less "ninja" aesthetic. Since Super7's G.I. Joe Ultimates line is based more off the cartoon than anything else, it's no surprise that they'd do this design of the silent commando before his...[See More]
B.A.T.
G.I. Joe (Super7) - Ultimates
Rated 4.75 stars by RMaster007
The launch figure for Super7's G.I. Joe line was not something from the main line, but rather a Comic Con exclusive of the B.A.T. (Battle Android Trooper)'s comic design. I made sure to order one when I had the chance, and it was a great start to the new line. Now, here's the cartoon version. As I mentioned in my review of the comic B.A.T., both it and the cartoon version share much of the same tooling, but with some areas of difference. One of those different areas of the head, as the cartoon version has a much different head shape, and also seems to be a little smaller in size. The head is very accurate to the cartoon, and gets some nice paint as well, utilizing a bold red color for the "face." There's also a battle-damaged portrait, but while the comic head had some denting and a...[See More]
Cobra Commander
G.I. Joe (Super7) - Ultimates
Rated 4.65 stars by RMaster007
One of the most iconic 80s villains, and would-be most dangerous terrorist… if the Joes didn't foil his plans every other day, and if he didn't run away every time. As a foe whose true identity is a mystery, just like the person who sculpted this figure, Cobra Commander is commonly seen wearing what appears to be a metal mask, along with a blue helmet. The sculpt for the head looks good, since it's hard to screw up a portrait with no visible face. I thought the helmet was too high up on the head at first, but it looks fine in-hand aside from being a little off-center. Although the hooded look was just as common in-show, Hasbro barred Super7 from doing it for some reason. Instead, they threw in another masked head without the gray stripe on his helmet, a nod to the original CC figure....[See More]
Battle Armor S.N.A.K.E.
G.I. Joe (Super7) - Super Cyborg
Rated 3.75 stars by RMaster007
Although ReAction and Ultimates are what Super7's most known for, they've done a few other kinds of toys. There's their "supersize" vinyl figures, their Shogun Warriors tributes, known as Super Shogun, and their Super Cyborg line, dedicated to producing large-scale figures of robots and mechs (and for some reason, the Creature from the Black Lagoon). The latest Cyborg release, as well as my first one, comes from none other than G.I. Joe. Specifically, it's the S.N.A.K.E. Armor, based heavily off the original toy. The box for this thing is massive, which is fitting given the figure is equally large. The graphics are simple, but are based off the old Joe toy card/box art. There's a bio for the armor on the side, and the back provides an X-ray view of the figure. What I don't like about the...[See More]
