Exo-Skeleton Spawn (Spawn) Review
Exo-Skeleton Spawn
Spawn (McFarlane)4 series in, Todd and company had settled into a couple of habits: one was including at least one oddball Spawn in every wave. This time around, they were She-Spawn and this weirdo. And two, lots of variants and running changes, hence the strange colors we see here.
Of the four color schemes and three heads (!) available in this case, I chose this one in honor of my love for garishly colored skeletons, and it doesn't disappoint there. Lots of spines and a long bendy tail (with Thagomizer) make it look big and fancy, and the black accents really pop. The underlying body, rather than the strong red I was expecting, is a pretty washed-out shade in person, which I'm kind of iffy on. Then again, it might have been the only way to avoid too strong a contrast.
That aside, said body is actually just Spawn II from the previous wave, which means a permanent half-squat and a spread of 10 POA, all swivels except the hinged elbows. This is what left the door open for reusing those variant heads, with full-, half- or unmasked looks. I lucked out with the full mask.
All that bone armor is therefore designed around the existing body, which does present problems. The backpack pegs had to be shaved down a bit, and the arm guards (with extending claws that frankly look awful when slid down) have to clip onto asymmetrical armor- which they do, it just leaves them hovering a fair bit off the forearms. The boots share this problem when they could have easily just been molded off the legs as opposed to cramming more clips in there. The skull helmet barely stays put, constantly wanting to bobble around.
So. Missteps were made here. Do they ruin the toy? Of course not, it's a Spawn the color of undercooked meat, wearing an elaborate mishmash of bright green monster bones. I can't argue with that in the end. But I will call out its problems, because I'm an honest man. Final recommendation: it probably looks better in the less bizarre color schemes, but either way, those limbs will look a little off. I can forgive it, but your mileage may vary.
