Catwoman (Exclusive) (Batman (Mondo)) Review
Catwoman (Exclusive)
Batman (Mondo) (Mondo)If there's one thing I can say about sixth scale, it's that it's not for everyone. While there's plenty out there, the high prices of them are a big turn-off, and besides that, there aren't a lot of licenses that interest me. I'm not a Star Wars fan, and there isn't much Marvel-wise that interests me, but one company that does have me reeled in a bit is Mondo. Their TMNT Michelangelo was the first one I got, and now I have a second figure: Catwoman, sporting her Batman: the Animated Series design. While they have done Batman and Mr. Freeze beforehand, you're going to have to pay big bucks on the secondhand market for them, and I don't feel like doing that (yet).

We got a big fifth-panel box for the figure, and the illustration on the front, depicting Catwoman holding a pearl necklace, looks great. Phantom City Creative is who to thank for that, and they did a nice job with the artwork overall. Everything on the inside is held in place with a plastic tray, with the cover being held onto it with tape. Everything is easy to take out, a big plus for a figure with plenty of accessories.

As mentioned before, Catwoman is made in a 1:6 scale, so she stands tall at about 11 1/4" from the feet to "ears". The sculpt stays true to the simplistic designs of the show, and the proportions look good as well. We get three alternate heads here - one with a neutral look, one smiling, and one angry. Despite the eyes being larger on the heads than on the box's illustration, I can assure you that it's accurate. Paint's nice, too, and it's meant to look cel-shaded just like how she was on-screen, and while it can look off in most poses outside of just standing, it's still neat.

The articulation is average by today's standards for figures, but there are a few nits here and there. The head is a barbell ball-joint, and it works well, along with the heads swapping easily. The swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, and wrists are good for plenty of arm poses, and the elbows and wrists have swivels on both sides of the joint. The ball-jointed chest and waist allow for more dynamic poses, but the chest works better than the waist. The hips are swivel/hinge, with ratchets to help them keep a pose, and we also got swivel/hinge/swivel joints at the knees and ankles, and swivel thighs. The ankles don't have any rocker, but you can turn the hinge sideways to allow side-to-side tilt. The main issue here is how loose the leg joints can be, and Catwoman's pretty top-heavy too, so getting her to stand without the included base can be hard. And I do mean hard.

There's plenty of accessories to allow for various display options, and all make sense with the character. Aside from the three different heads, there's five pairs of hands included - closed, gripping, relaxed, and two with claws out. They swap with a bit of force, and they pop off at the joint and not the hand itself, and while they fit well, the gripping left is pretty loose at the swivel, making it frustrating to pose. Two different whips are included, one loose and one posed coiled, and whatever one looks nicer in your display is up to you. Catwoman is a thief, so it's no surprise that she includes some loot, consisting of a diamond, a necklace, and a small bag, as well as a spy camera. Batman's handcuffs are included here for when she gets caught in the act, and her pet cat Isis, outfitted with a ball-jointed head to add some personality, rounds things out. There's also the base I mentioned earlier, which has a crotch support rod to keep her upright, important for a figure with loose joints on the legs.

Mondo likes to do "exclusive" versions of their figures through their website, containing one or more extra accessories for a few extra bucks. The "exclusive” Catwoman has two extra accessories, the first being a fourth head of Selina Kyle, her true identity, and it looks just as nice as the other ones. The second is another Isis, but sculpted to rest on her owner's shoulders. I got this figure from BBTS since it was on sale and knew damn well it would be the regular version, so imagine my surprise when I got the exclusive version instead! For $55 off a $165 figure, that's a steal Catwoman herself would approve of.

As I stated in the beginning of this review, I usually don't go for sixth-scale, but the lower prices of Mondo's figures (which are sadly getting a bit higher) do make them more worth getting and being my second one from the company, Catwoman turned out nice. Those loose knees and ankles are a major issue, but as long as I have the base, I can live. I know they got a Joker planned as the next one in the line, so now all we have to do is sit and wait.
