Horrid Spawn (McFarlane)Ah, the Horrid. Every fantasy story needs a reptilian beastie of some sort, and this one is nicely understated for MacFarlane at the time. Don't get me wrong, the detailing is great. I love all the scaly textures, the overlapping plates, that wicked smile. What I mean is, there are no accoutrements. No GWAR-esque armor, no arrows sticking out of it, no accessories. Just a big ol' dragon, built like a wyvern with arms. I can't honestly say which color scheme looks better; the brown one just feels more "natural", but I do love the grey and red here. Got a nice feel to it, almost like a gargoyle. Paint is the usual kind, muddy in all the right places but still plenty tight around key areas like the face. And while I can come up with a few more joints that could've knocked this out of the park, it's quite adequate with what it has: swivel-hinge shoulders, peg hips, pin knees and ankles, swivel wrists, hinged fingers, and ball joint wings. Oh, and three ball joints in the neck. Just about everything has a pretty good range of motion, too. But at the same time, it's also let down by a few design quirks. For one, it's got oddly loose ankles, and the knees simply can't take the weight of a standing pose very well. Without some kind of support, he's going to either sag or fall over eventually, hopefully not off the shelf. The arms have their own problem: a nasty case of "ape arms". An inward-bending elbow is never a good idea, especially when there's no joint there. Even a bicep swivel would have been nice. That said, it's enough for a few poses, just not as many as one would expect. That said, the sheer size of the thing (among this line, anyway) does bump up the score a bit. It's as good a dragon toy as any, really, at least in the domestic market. What it lacks in flashiness, it makes up for in a quietly competent look and feel. If you like dragons, find one of these. You won't be disappointed. Much. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
