Raphael (Frankenstein) (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Neca)) Review
Raphael (Frankenstein)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Neca) (Neca)Remember when Playmates actually tried with TMNT? The original line from the late-80s and early-90s had a lot of creativity put into it, and we had Turtles as olympic contestants, astronauts, sumo wrestlers, and Universal Monsters. The last of those sub-lines has come back not through Playmates, but rather NECA, who currently owns both licenses. The first one, Raphael as Frankenstein, came out a few months ago, and we should be getting Leonardo in this line soon.

The packaging art on the front isn't too special, just being a painting of the figure, but it looks really nice, so much so you'd think it was a photograph. The back feels reminiscent of an old movie poster, with eye-catching photos and text. This is the usual fifth-panel NECA packaging, so you can flip open the front and see the figure inside.

The design team went the realistic route for FrankenRaph, and it looks as he'll fit in great with the movie Turtles or regular Universal monsters. His head has a nasty grimace, fitting for someone as short-tempered as Raphael, and a flat head with hair and a scar much like Frank's. He's wearing a coat that's much more tattered than the regular monster, and has lifts on his shoes as well to drive the reference home further. His shell has a lot of cracks on it, and one section was replaced by part of a manhole cover. The chain belt is really nice, mainly because it's an actual metal chain, not that using those is new for the company. The paint work is great as well, making use of various colors and wash to make him pop visually, and the meters on his chest and back have a foggy appearance. Raphael stands 7" tall, making him taller than your regular turtle, much like how Frankenstein's monster was taller than a regular man.

The articulation here is very similar to the movie Turtles line, with a couple differences. The ball-jointed head and neck combo allows him to look all around, but the bolts in his neck restrict things a little bit. The bandana tail is a ball-joint as well, so you can turn and tilt it for a wind-blown appearance. The arms have swivel/hinge joints at the shoulders, elbows (double-jointed), and wrists, but the wrists needed plenty of hot water to get them moving. The ball-jointed waist is okay, but it doesn't have as much tilt as I want. The legs are great with ball-socket hips, swivel thighs, double-hinged knees with a swivel at the top, and swivel/hinge ankles. Don't expect to get a real deep bend with those knees, though. Overall, the articulation is nice, but there's quite a bit of limitation.

The accessory count with Raphael is rather light, which is a shame, considering all the cool accessories Playmates' UM/TMNT line had. There's three sets of hands included; a pair of grasping/open hands, a pair of fists, and a pair of gripping hands. They swap easily, but as mentioned earlier, they needed hot water to get moving, and they also felt waxy out of box. Ick. Raph's signature weapons, his sai, are here of course, but with a lighting bolt/laboratory appearance. They can fit in both the holsters on his front and his gripping hands, though getting them into the hands takes some work. Be careful doing so, or you'll snap off a piece of them. It already happened to me. Twice.

While he's not a perfect figure, FrankenRaph's a good start to a new line. More accessories and less limited articulation would've been good, but on the bright side, he looks absolutely stunning. The less-limited availability also helps, and you can easily get him online. We've gotten six figures in this line revealed so far, with three of them up for pre-order now, and I'm excited to see who else we'll get.
