Slash Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Super7) (Super7)It's been a good while since we've last got some of Super7's TMNT Ultimates in-hand, and the wait was a lot longer than we thought. Wave 5 was supposed to be out back in March, but we all know how delayed S7 products can get. That wave has already gotten in some reviewers' hands, and should be hitting customers and retailers very soon, but the first new release actually comes from wave 6, and it's my most anticipated release from the line: Slash. Super7 continues to use the same packaging for their Ultimates; a trapezoidal window box with a slipcover. It looks pretty nice thanks to all the unique graphics, and it's not hard to get everything out of it. Slash gets a larger box than usual, just like Muckman, so try to make room for it. I'm fairly certain Four Horsemen are still doing the sculpting for this line, and they did a great job with Slash. He's not only a nice recreation of the original figure, but he's nearly twice the size at around 6" tall. While that is the same size as the main turtles, Slash is a lot chunkier than them, so he's bigger than you think. His skin is covered with scratches and bumps, giving him a similarly rough texture. Two different heads are included here; the default head is the same expression as the original, but the extra one in a new, snarling expression. Both look great, though I like the new head a lot more. As for the paint, it's mostly clean, with a couple notable differences from the old figure. Slash's skin is turquoise again, but a darker shade than before. Some may not like it, but I think it's cool. The big difference is the belt. The original figure was released with both black and pink belts, but this version makes it both colors. The knife holster in the back is kept, but all the little weapons sculpted onto the original are now separate pieces which I'll talk about below. The shoulder pads are solid pink, though, and I wish they added a little more color to them here. Slash follows the same path of articulation the good turtles have, with a ball-jointed head and waist, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, and ankles, and swivels at the biceps, thighs, and tail. The joints are very sturdy, most notably the hips. I've heard complaints about the fifth wave having loose hips, and I'm glad these are nice and tight. The head has great range, and you can swap it out with the alternate one easily. There are a few complaints, though. The wrists were pretty tight at first, but they loosened up easily. The left knee also had some wobble to it, so I popped it off and found some excess plastic on the peg, and I snipped it off in hopes that would fix things. All in all, Slash can manage a good deal of poses. The thing that really makes this figure feel "ultimate" is all the accessories included. Slash has that extra head I mentioned a few times, along with four sets of hands: gripping, vertically-hinged gripping, grasping, and closed. The hands swap easily, and have nice, thick pegs. The mace, nunchucks, dagger, and knife from the original figure are here, and are fully painted now. The shurikens were molded onto the belt originally, but now they're their own pieces. The regular shuriken and two curvy shurikens can attach onto pegs on the belt, and there's not one, but two spiky grenades. The belt also has an extra holster that can hold one of them by its clip. The katana is all new, and it resembles a longer version of his dagger. Lastly, there's the unpainted weapons sprue, something the original figure didn't have, and something this one doesn't have a use for. I'm not interested in cutting the weapons off of it, and overall, it just feels unnecessary. After these two recent waves, we won't see them again, but I appreciate S7 getting creative with it here, as it resembles a couple planks poorly tied together. Slash is my favorite figure of the original Playmates line, and this one proves to be my favorite of the Super7 line. While there are a few, very minor issues, they did great overall, but it's just nice to get a new figure in this line after all this time. While there's plenty more to look forward to, it may be hard to top this one. - 9/28/22 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
